Seems the new security weeny-ette wants to compare all future server OS loads (64-bit Winderz) to the GD. I have no initial problems with it *UNTIL* I spend 30-minutes dancing around it's hardening/limitations to make a 2-second kindergarten change  ...

I know there are several IT folks working for the gov'ment likely following the DISA standards, so let me have the good/bad/ugly from your experiences... (just want to know what I'm in for) :flipoff2:

Some of the issues will be with using the internet and the use of external media devices. A lot of websites will be blocked, but if you need to access them you should be able to get the port unblocked if it is work related. Where I work at a lot of the web sites, like this one, are blocked and only open during lunch then again after work hours. Thumb drives are totally locked out for use. Now I'm sure a lot of the restrictions we have (Ft. Bragg) are in addition and unique to the normal GD restrictions. Also most of the desktop options will be taken away and if you can make any of those chages the Group Policies will change it back to the GD standard once you log off and on again. Bottom line your computer will be a much more business computer and much less of a personal computer, which is probably a goood thing.

I have nothing to add,

[rant] except when we were pushed into the monstrous DISA-managed email system last summer, it all went to complete shit. For 3 months I had an ~20% probability of an email either never making it to me or never making it out. Then occasionally I'd get 100 that were back-dated. We literally lost tens of thousands of dollars in funding b/c of messages never received.
Now the "missing email" rate is down to "only" ~1%...
but the biggest PITA is that when there is a question/problem, our local IT guys can only push it on to DISA, who reply 50% of the time anywhere from 1-20 days later.

Whoever thought that having a single group covering ALL DoD IS is an idiot.
