Dishwasher recommendations

I just got a new maytag for the new house. It has the stainless tub so no more crappy plastic. So far so good it was a lot heavier than the one i had in the old place.

Paper plates and utensils.

I have nothing to contribute. Every dish washer I've ever used leaked....plus they were almost 20 years old too.

We bought one last year & learned a lot from family & friends. MIL had a LG that did not have a food grinder, but claimed to use heat to break down the food. That never seemed to work very well & she had to crawl in & clean it out frequently as it would stink. She didn't leave the dishes very dirty at all, but didn't want to wash them first either. I believe Bosch uses the same technique. We bought a Kitchen Aid & have been happy. Only other suggestion I'd give beyond ours is to get the controls on the top of the door. Just leaning against ours will start it if the controls are no locked.

Read the online reviews before buying. Never pay what they are asking. There's always wiggle room on appliances.

check the height of the bottom rack to the sprayer for the top rack. If its not high enough, your plates will block the sprayer from cleaning the top rack. While I've never had this issue, my parents have a diswasher that was expensive and nice and had good performance ratings but the sprayer for the top rack hits the plates put on the bottom. They can only wash like 4 plates at a time on the bottom because they have to be layed over so far for clearance issues.

While I've never bought a diswasher new from the store, I would measure for clearances before I did so I don't have this issue. Every time I go to their house I hear about the POS expensive diswasher!

I have some GE type of dishwasher. I NEVER pre-wash or rinse the dishes before they go in the dishwasher and they come out clean like 99% of the time. I've been pleased with my GE.

We bought a high end Bosch unit about 3 yrs ago. The best thing about it is that it is so quiet you can't even tell if it is running. The only bad thing is that the soap door sometimes wouldn't open. I never figured out if it was operator error on fully closing it or a mechanical problem. It was not consistent about not opening, but just did it every once in a while.

We just sold our house, and I'm probably going to research them on CR before buying one for the new house. We will see, but I'm thinking Maytag.

I also have a problem with my soap door not opening. The utensil basket sits on the front of the bottom rack (or in the door). I figured out that if I put anything longer than a spoon or the kid's forks in the basket below the soap dispenser, it wouldn't open because they were blocking the door. Once we moved all long utensils to other parts of the basket, all is good.

I have a delay timer on my diswasher, so I can set it up for 2, 4, or 6 hr delay and when we are done with dinner, close it up and get it ready and it'll turn on and run in the night and not bother us in the evening. That is one of my favorite options :) The racks have adjustable heights which works well for odd sized items but is rarely used. The bottom rack also has removable dividers which is nice for big pots and pans but never really gets used except during holidays when I have big pots and pans that need to be washed.

Did anybody ever find a good review site?

I could care less about how much electricity or water they use. I want one that's kinda quiet, doesn't suffer from any stupid engineering decisions, and GETS THE DISHES CLEAN.

We've got a Whirlpool right now that's all right. My biggest complaint is that all the silverware goes in a long tray that's clipped to the door. This seems to be pretty common with Whirlpool/Maytag units. And... it sucks. Half the silverware is still dirty when the wash is done. The compartments are all full, and it's leaning against the door, so only half of it is open to the sprayers.

You need a slightly older one. The leaks become predictable too.

Ours is like that. I REALLY like the extra space it affords in the bottom tray.
What we've learned is that when we toss utensils in the tray, we spread them out and try not to duplicate types on top of each other within each little sub-compartment. This prevents them from compactly stacking (like spoons fitting into one another) and keeping from getting cleaned.

Ours is LOUD - I've been hoping for something to break catastrophically so I can justify replacing it.
But I'm w/ you - water/energy conservation are at the bottom of my list of things I care about in a dishwasher.

I dunno... I think the whole idea is stupid. Yeah, it frees up the bottom rack, but it ensures that only one side of the silverware is exposed to the sprayer. We've been trying to spread stuff out, but at a certain point, there's just too much stuff in the slots.

Does anybody have any opinions about Consumer Reports before I buy a subscription? It's only like $8 for a month.... probably worth it....?

We have a Frigidaire, it is one of their higher end units, it is quiet and seems to be holding up good, I put it in about 8 years ago to rid ourselfs of the noisy builder grade unit.

I used to use it religiously, had a subscription for years. After we moved I never got it renewed. I found that in general I only needed it at very specific times, at which I would just got find and buy that specific issue. But lately I feel like I can generally get the same information online just by googling for a product and reviews.Sometimes other sites even summarize the CR reviews ;-)
But in general I've found it to be pretty helpful.

If you can get it through a Boy Scout or Band student or something, it may be worthwhile

Just replaced every appliance in the house. IMO Consumer Reports was worthless, plus, I had a small problem dropping their charge of my card when I canceled. After trying them two different times the last few years I would not use their services again. We went with all LG appliances and have been pretty pleased so far. As for the dishwasher, I like it a lot. It is roomy with lots of options for arranging the space. It is SILENT! It is so quiet my wife can hardly hear it run and I can't tell it's on unless I see the lights on the door. We didn't think we would like the controls on top of the door but after using it for a couple of months it turns out we do! We have ALWAYS bought low end stuff when it comes to appliances, TVs, VCR, etc. This time we went over the top on the high end, almost $1k for the dishwasher. Maybe you do get what you pay for with centain purchases. Anyway we are pleased with our LG dishwasher, ........, so far.

Bringing this back from the grave. Our 3.5 yr old Electrolux dishwasher is leaking and the door is popping open while it is running. The bottom rack has not rolled in and out correctly since new. We replaced the bottom rack with a new one but it has the same problem. We are going to buy a new dish washer. Any recommendations? We had a Bosch at our old house that we bought to replace a POS GE builder basic model. The Bosch was super quiet and worked pretty good. That was several years ago though.

I have a Bosch, it works really well. It's super quiet and has a red LED that shines on the floor so you can see it's running (there's nothing on the front to look at).

Have you checked to see if your Electrolux needs leveling or somehow out of square? The door popping open and rack rolling problem almost sounds like the chassis is twisted.

900 Series Bosch or nothing.

I've bought three of them in the last few years for different projects. Not a problem from any of them.

Don't really have much to add,I just loaded up what Tonya picked out.I do know NOT to put Lego's in the dishwasher. Those particular toys are not dishwasher safe.

Sounds like Bosch is the winner! Thanks.
