I have a 77 Jeep CJ5 with a 304. The PO said the motor was rebuilt. I bought it in the process of being put back together. After getting it back to gether I got the motor running. It took some time to get tuned. The jeep was only ran to move in out of the garage becasuse I was still doing other things to it.

The problem: The engine died and was not getting spark. I noticed the rotor was not turning so I pulled the distributor. The gear was shot. I looked down in and the cam gear looks fine. I put a new distibutor and gear in. I began tuning. I drove it 4 miles and it began to act up again. I pulled the distibutor and the gear is bad again.

qustion: Has anybody seen this. Before I pull the motor and change cams does anyone have suggestions?

Had this happen to an old race car of mine a few years back. It was a siezed oil pump.

probably has a hardened gear on the cam, eating up the dizzy gear.
