Not knowing the rest of the details.
As another shop owner- I am damn impressed with Andy coming on and owning it like he has.
In this business Sheet happens. Especially when you get into one-offs and semi-exotic builds. Which are going to get taken out and beat on in every imaginable way (and a few un-imaginable ways).
Anyone who has never had a job go wrong - probably hasn't done much.

When bad things happen - you man-up - make it right and go on.

From the outside looking in - that is what I see.

I agree, and Andy is probably one of the best at standing behind his work. He is a real craftsman when it comes to this. His work is as much art as it is science and there's few shops out there that I would say this about.

In my business (residential roofing, siding and window installations), there are true artisans in their craft, there are contractors that do the job just to get it done, and there are jack-legs out there just to make a buck. We only hire true artisans, because we are putting our name on the job. That's what pride in workmanship is. The mere fact that Andy is on this board, ready and willing to take the responsibility (and already apparently has the fix in the works) should speak to the type of business he conducts. Just see if any of the "big name" shops would bother with that....

Andy's web site says it all..... he doesn't claim to have all the answers, but you better well know that he will do the research necessary to find them....

Kudo's to Andy!

Long story short, what could have been disasterous, was taken care of with some effort. We still wheeled. Not 100%, but we wheeled. The problem is being taken care of, and that is that.

I am ready(except for the pockets) to go again.

sounds like another one of those awsome crs 4 link crossmembers fell apart. ive never seen that happen before....

As shop owner I am responsible for the guys that work for me as well. When there is a mistake then I take responsibility just as if I had done it myself. This type of mistake will not happen again, we have put some checks in place to make sure of that.

All the kidz should take note. This is what character looks like.

hmmmm

yeah but a 4 link crossmember would not be as bad as say a set of gears and locker that were not installed right and BOOM went a front end or there are a million things that might happen to some unlucky 4 wheeler somewhere in the US and we just pray for it to only be a jeep or truck part and not human life. Vehicle Parts can be replaced. Human life cannot. So things get fixed and 4 wheeling continues. :driver:

KRAWLER :smokin:

Yeah I remember laying under my buddy's old Jeep trying to weld his lower crossmember back together... I guess building rigs to ride around on the road is different from building them to withstand the abuse of off road conditions. Maybe the R should stand for "road" instead of that other four letter word......

Maybe at the mall having gears go would be worse, but on the trail, on a steep climb and the crossmember goes, it could get REAL bad, real quick. (Not to mention damaging those über blingy Atlas cases)

Maybe it's just "that Jeep thing.. it fell off in my hand" er, "I wouldn't understand" :flipoff2:

I've tried to hold my tongue on responding to this, but what the hell. I own a shop, from time to time things go wrong here, we have always taken care of the people when it did. It happens, end of story.
I don't go on to message boards and lecture backyard fabricators about how they shouldn't market themselves as a "shop" due to liabilty issues (as was done on this board to "tacoma747" and others). The design of the 4 link looked nice, it just hadn't been welded in on the upper mounts and it ripped apart, again stuff happens. What wasn't mentioned was this is the second time it's happened on a 4link built by CRSU. The design on both looked great , but the follow through was lacking. After Pheery's folded up from poor welding, it's pushing unacceptable to let a similar thing happen due to the same cause. I know Andy, and I'm sure he didn't mean for those to go out of there like they did, but Greg's did..again. Greg drove his rig from camp to the trails and could have been injured or hurt someone else.I say this because this board seems to be overly anal about safety. I'm not saying this hasn't or will never happen on anything of mine, but I don't market myself as a 4x4 shop and other than friends, we don't do that sort of work. I'm glad to see Andy own up to it and make it right, I just hope quality control becomes priority one, all it takes is this happening a few times to ruin a good business.
Don't take this as bashing , I'm not...but people on this board love to point out others short comings, I'm just reminding people we ALL are living in glass houses.

Woody, maybe you misunderstood.... not sure.

But what you wrote.... pretty much the same thing I wrote, no? If you still disagree, go back and look at the section of zubz reply that I quoted.

sorry..hit "quote" instead of reply...my bad

things break with the hobby we have chosen, and that is fine. but recurring incidents is cause for concern, that is all.

Well put and I am taking responsibility in each case for the guys that work for me. I am going to make sure that this type of mistake does not happen again.......

It only takes one or two instances to cause a problem, even though we turn out a ton of trucks and work every week that is abused with no problems. That is still unacceptable to me so we are making sure it is taken care of.

wow!! alot of shit being thrown about my rig here.
I wasn't going to say much about it but i guess after all this discussion i need to chime in here.
The reality of it is, a weld was missed, a four link broke, and it royally sucked and ruined my vacation. The facts that are missing from this discussion are that before everything went bad and after we welded the crossmember back up THE SUSPENSION WORKED REALLY WELL. Had that weld not have been missed I would have been very pleased with the outcome of the suspension.

as bill said, "Anyone who has never had a job go wrong, has NOT done much".

In the end, I ripped Andy pretty badly for missing this, he took it like a man and vowed to make it right at any cost. To me that means a lot!!

Any body who knows me personally, knows I got completely taken for a ride by another so called 4x4 fab shop. when everything went south on the last build that other shops owner told me to go suck an egg, in so many words. and to this day he still has not made it right. Over a year later at the cnc show he trudged up to me and offered to do something only after finding out how public i AM ABOUT HIS SHODDY WORKMANSHIP. he also only offered to do something if i brought the new and improved rig down to him over 3 hrs from my home. I had already brough it to them 3 times prior and they sent me out with a shock welded solid in place of a lower link. FAWKIN REDICULOUS!!
tHATS WHY i WENT TO ANDY IN THE FIRST PLACE, to straighten out the other shops fiasco.

now hopefully you notice the difference in these two major players in the NC area. Andy cowboyd up and instantly offered to make it right, not to mention withstood my loads of verbal abuse. and for that i will continue to use him and he still remains among one of my good friends.

john (studnuts) proved to be a good friend and was willing to jump right in and help back at camp. all that and i did not even know him yet.
He proved he is of good charachter and i look forward to wheelin with him again soon.

also, I run shops for a living all over N.C., so i completely understand that somtimes things go wrong. Its what happens after the wake of disaster that separates the TRUE PROFESSIONALS from the fly by night, dont give a shits!!

I get alot of shit for letting somebody else do my 4 link, but it has been said numerous times here on the board, "anybody can build a 4 link, but only a few can do it right".
I want to stress again that this is my second attempt a four link under this rig and the CRS JOB worked light years better than the competitions (except the weld that broke)!

because this has made it to the world wide in-tard-web, i will be sure to post up and let everybody know what the outcome is, good or bad.

And to that "other" shop, i dare you to come in and challenge what I wrote b/c i have been biting my tongue for a long time and all I need is a reason to flame you fawker!

Anyone have some more pics?

Crap, now I know who you are.... I think...

Don't you/didn't tow with a J-Truck to the DR last year? Looks like you and your Jeep. I walked down around your camp site last year with CaverDave. We hung out and talked... ok, caver did most of the talking... for a couple hours.

I like the fender trimming around the Rancho sticker :D

Jeep looks good

believe it or not, I did cut around it! LOL Don't look too hard though it has many issues in both design and function

I guess I can't laugh too much, I've done the same thing in the past, but not to that degree...
