I wrote Greg Griffith a couple months ago and never received a reply. My questions were simple, what trails are open. According to the sfwda website
http://www.sfwda.org/dixierun/
It says lower 2 is open.
My question was is it. or will it be, maybe for just this event?
I also offered a suggestion about relocating the DR to possibly Harlan. I know that in a way admits defeat, but at the same time, it will give the wheeling folks somewhere to wheel. Talking to a couple of guys in Mnt City I was told School Bus, Guardrail, and Helicopter, were all open, but trails had been "fixed" so that you could get to the obstacle in a 2wd truck!!
So, as in past years I had to schedule time off for this event, but if there isn't enough fun trails to ride, as of now I plan on going to Harlan for the week.

alright I copied the quote from the other thread.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? Tellico, Windrock, Harlan? I'll go ahead and tell you it will probably be at Tellico which I think it should. The event is about raising funds for Tellico so why not. Last year the turn out was so-so IMO and I've heard more people this year talking about not going.

I also told them about Lower 2 and that they need to fix that language but we'll see.

if i dont break too much at harlan earlier in the month, i may try to make it out for this ride. I think it should be at tellico, because that it what it is for, but if it could draw a bigger crowd and raise more funds elsewhere, at windrock or something, it could actually do more for the cause. I will have to decide closer to time if i will be going. Also, i would like if it were at tellico, just because i have never been able to make it out there.

from the site....

I was thinking it was late october, I wont be able to make this :(

Was there last weekend. Lower 2, peckerwood, and slick rock are all closed. There was another portion of trail in the upper right that was closed also. Schoolbus, guardrail, and helicopter pad were open. Those were the only real obsticles. Most of the other trails are 2wd trails. The only trail we did not do was upper 2 which can be fun also.

From SFWDA Blog:

The Upper Tellico OHV Area is NOT Closed!
September 24th, 2008
There seems to be a perception that is spreading throughout the four wheel drive recreation community that the Upper Tellico OHV Area is closed. That perception is not correct. Currently the only trails closed are Lower 2, Trail 7, Trail 9 and a portion of Trail 8 with the remainder of the trails being open. There is a winter seasonal closure but this only affects the winter months.

Proposed actions by the Forest Service published in the scoping letter (which SFWDA is countering) would affect more trails but these are as stated “proposed actions” that are not in effect. This is not to say that we can rest on our laurels however. The risk is still there and we must continue with the Rescue Tellico efforts and maintain our stance for what we believe in. I have stated before and will state again that as an association our commitment to this effort is unwavering but it takes all of us to make it happen. Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, United Four Wheel Drive Associations, and Blue Ribbon Coalition are united in this effort but once again it takes all of us.

Dixie Run registration is on the SFWDA web site (www.sfwda.org). The event is the premier four wheel drive event east of the Mississippi and if you are not aware is held in the Upper Tellico Area. It is great time for everyone and helps support the Southern Four Drive Association efforts with the public lands we support. If you have not attended the Dixie Run and have been on the fence about coming, please come check it out. I think you will have a good time. If you planning to attend, we will see you there and thank you in advance for putting this event into your busy calendar. As I wrote in a previous Presidents Corner, it truly is the “Dixie Run Experience”.

In closing, the UPPER TELLICO AREA IS NOT CLOSED! Only the trails mentioned at the beginning of this article are closed. Go ride, support and enjoy this beautiful area. Also, we ask that you help us pass this message along.

See you there,

Gary

RESCUE TELLICO!

This may sound like a saleout thing to do, but the past 3 years, i have gone to dixie run with out the jeep. Yep, just took the daily driver. Never saw the first trail. Instead, I took my daughter and the tent. We have a blast walking around talking with folks, seeing the rigs and playing the kids games.

In the past the trails were really clogged, so there was a lot of just sitting and waiting/watching. So one year I decided to leave the jeep at home. I still go and support the event by buying raffle tickets and the entry fee. But this is one time I dont mind not wheeling at an event. I have ridden all the trails at Tellico many times so I am now leaving that up to others, while I just stay at the main area.

I have won a ton of great stuff during the raffle, and met a ton of cool folks just hanging around with no particular place to go. I will probably do this again this year.

My point is...wheeling or not...it is fun just to show up and support this event.

For as long as I have been going, it's always the first weekend of October.

X2

Everyone that usually goes should still try to go. If everyone backs out because the trails are now "easy" then we are basically giving up. I was there when the trails were really easy and when they were really hard and had a great time every year. The trails will get back hard, but we must keep riding and supporting Tellico to be able to ride them when they get hard.

I take a vacation every year at this time. I started planning this years vacation, last year. I have to schedule vacation ahead of time. I want to wheel. I too enjoy the overall experience of the Dixie Run. I have attended every year for the last eleven. I enjoy the raffle. I enjoy seeing old friends, I enjoy gawking at some of the kewl rigs, but above everything else, I want to wheel, not just drive. If everything over there is doable in 2WD up till you get to the main obstacle, then it can all be done in a day. Heck, before, when there was no crowds, We could do most of all of it in a day when it was hard(for you Rob). So why am I not going, I want to wheel everyday, and not the same thing over and over.
As for trail congestion, yes, I have seen it, but in past years I have wheeled all week up till Friday, and no congestion. Saturday was about the only day I saw any of that.
If I were only planning a three day weekend, I would go, no doubts. But, I plan on a weeks worth, and it ain't there now.
I am a southern supporter, and will continue to be. But it's just not at this event.

You must be older than me cause I've never seen that! :)

Easy, I mean I've been there back when my CJ5 with 2.5" lift and 1 locker went up lower 2 without winching and followed a ZJ on 32s and open front/rear and made lower 2 without winching. It wasn't that difficult back then, not nearly like it is (was?) now..
