Dixie Run XX 2006 Monday

We arrived at the camp ground on Sunday 9/24. The drive up was uneventful, but had rain most of the way. When we got to the campground the rain had stopped. The field was pretty mushy as I soon found out. I drove a total of about 30 feet, and was stuck. We unloaded the Jeep, and were still stuck, took the trailer off, and yep, were still stuck. I drove the Jeep around and winched it to where I wanted to park it. Larry Smith hooked his Dodge to my trailer and we went and parked it in the trailer field. We came back and set up camp. About the same time as we got all set up, it started to rain again. Larry decided to take a nap, and Leslie and I played cards. We had a river running under out porch/kitchen! After the rain stopped we built a fire and sat around relaxing and talking by the camp fire. Around 12 midnight, Kenneth and Crystal drove in and set up their camp.

Monday morning we all got up and made breakfast, and decided we wanted an easy day for the first outing so we might be able to keep the rigs alive to last the whole week. So, we decided on Slick Rock.

With Kenneth in his Hybrid, Crystal in her Bronco, me in My Jeep half cab, and Larry in his ever dependable Toyota, We set out for Slick Rock via trial 4, over to Vains Ford. There we all played on the big rock ledge. Kenneth crawled it with his Hybrid, Crystal made it up the right hand side due to clearance issues, I was able to crawl it and Larry made it up the face too. On to Slick Rock. The trail up there is defiantly a frame twister! It will really work a suspension! Very doable, but you do have to navigate your way through it. We got up to the rock garden just below the rock face and Kenneth went up with ease. Crystal was next. Carnage hit. While crawling the rock garden she snapped the sector shaft in her steering box. She wasn’t thrashing it or even working it hard, it just snapped. After looking at it we saw where it had already been broke. There was rust on each side of the diameter of the shaft, so it was on a little over half of it intact. We got it over to the side with the help of Mr. Warn, and some ratchet straps. We knew we needed another steering box, or at least a sector shaft, so Larry and I stayed behind to take the box off, while Kenneth and Crystal Drove on out to try and get something to repair the now crippled Bronco. There is a rock ledge up above Slick Rock, and it’s a mean one. Kenneth was in a hurry to make the parts store, so he was at full throttle. Unfortunately, he broke a rear driver’s side Dana 70 shaft,… in two places. He made it from Slick Rock to the camp ground in and hour and a half. Anyone ever going there knows that was pushing it!
Larry and I got the box off, loaded all of Crystal’s tools and such onto out rigs and followed suit. At the ledge I tried a couple times, but with dark thirty coming down on us, I pulled rope. Larry made it up with some throttle and a good line. We were trying to go out trail 5, across the water crossing and were stopped by some downed trees. There were about 4 or 5 of them across the rail with only room for maybe a four wheeler to go under. Or at least that’s what we thought! On the way out on trail 1, we met up with Kenneth and Crystal in the Hybrid. He told us about the tree, and it took its toll. While squeezing under it, he busted his windshield. So for that day, it was carnage times three! We decided to call it a day and go in early Tuesday to fix the Bronco. On to camp for a fire, dinner. When we got to Camp, we found Greg Slade and his Brother Garth had arrived, along with Michael(Ontharox)

I have about 100 pictures that I need to sort through. We had a blast, except sitting on Lower 2 for 7 hours on Saturday, and one ticket for a buddy of mine in a buggy.

tempoffroad put on the show of the weekend, end of story.
Ditto....over 6 grand for what seemed like over a minute, with the headers glowing red and all four 44's pouring smoke off of them as he launched up the large ledge on lower 2 (not the go around). All of this after rolling trying it the first time.

Don't discount your attempt up the righthand line up HeloPad bouncing off the rev limiter! (thought I had a few pics of your rig moving right to left, but they were all a blur! )

The guys you ran with put on some equally impressive (just very quick shows) at Guardrail & HeloPad! Nothing like 500+ HP matted up the rocks!

ITS TRUE and its why the muddevils are the real deal

Bigwoody left out 1 thing. Thad also got about 2 feet in the air during that launch.Pics show his entire buggy at least 2 feet in the air and all 4 44's in mid air. One of my friends made it up that line too but not in the WILD way the muddevil maniac did.:driver: :D   It was one of the top 10 most impressive things I have seen at Tellico. I was standing close to him when he rolled. Thank the lord I decided to get off that big rock where i was taking pics. The other thing bigwoody forgot to metion is the reason Thad had to take the hardline to start with. There was a samy buggy that went the bypass and did so much damage. 1 he blew his motor well the timing belt, the 2 he tried to winch up and snapped his winch cable and then 3 he blew a beadlock and had to get towed out by the biggest baddest YJ I have ever seen.:bling: It had rocks 49 irocks and a smallblock 400 and a 1000 shot in the back. WOW!!!!!!

It was an amazing weekend to sit and watch lower 2 thats for sure. 1,000+ crazy people screaming and clapping and yelling for Thad. :)

what a great Dixie Run

I got some pics and if i could get help or someone that knows how they can post mine. Maybe Greg Slade or someone that lives close to me in the "getto of durham" HAHAHAHA!!!!!
Did anyone get pics of me spotting my friend craig up lower 2 in his rubicon on 285/75/16's. :) We almost walked the whole thing and as always I got dirty as hell and slipped a few times in the mud.:shaking:

*****A side note. Did anyone else have problems getting stuck in the fields in their tow rigs and get the chance to power their diesels through the mud bog in the first campground?? I got stuck and got help from a few rigs and the new gravel they brought in for us saturday. It was a mess. Great bonfires and a lot of friends hanging out and telling jokes and talking about stuff. Late nights and early mornings and break downs and stuff led to a long weekend.*****

I was fine until I shifted into drive (on the rev. limiter) and the HP60 ring gear lost some teeth as it crested the ledge.:driver:

Hold yer fawkin horses! :shaking:

Most of us spent the past 3-6 days humping up & down the hills, partying much, sleeping little AND had to fight the field to get out... just to get home for several hours of work stowing all the gear. Then it was grab a bit of sleep before returning to work...

So, you'll have to wait until tonight at the earliest for my pics! :flipoff2:

I have a thread over on NCTTORA with a few pics.

Also, SFWDA has a few pics up. Right now I'm the first one. I'm using my winch to get back on my wheels after a little flop. :)

Story: (copied from a post I made on pirate)
The guy that won the buggy raffle almost passed out. He had the winning ticket and seemed wobbly on his feet. He handed it to the guy with the mic and he said, "Umm, this says ticket 56725829."(or whatever the number was he made it sound like the wrong ticket.) The winner didn't know what to say. He was crushed. The the guy with the mic says, "I'm just kidding with you. You won."

The winner put his hands over his face and dropped to his knees. You could tell it was too good to be true for him. He was so happy I sort of thought, "I'm glad he won and I didn't. That guy *really* appreciates it."

It was a good moment.

o ok rockmafia. you teach me and ill post pics.

I wanted to also tell everyone that there was a private and special camera crew there this year to film different things for the 20th dixie run.:bling: 9 camera's running around so there will be a whole DVD released and sent to those of you who ordered it. I ordered one so I can't wait.:bounce: The only problem is that they missed out on filming the trails and the shows that everyone on lower 2 put on. I talked with their director about setting camera's on gaurdrail, helicopter pad, lower 2 and slickrock next year if they come back again. $20 for a dvd of the shows on lower 2 would have been a steal. There were 50+ rigs in the 2 days that I sat there watching and taking pics and spotting.

Sorry I did not get any pics, but I did have a great week of wheeling. I got there aroung 9ish Monday night and caught up with Ken, Crystal, Chip, and Leslie. Michael arrived a few hours before me because of a little detour I had to make. We headed out Tuesday to schoolbus where I preceeded to flop my ride. Michael has a few pics of that and as soon as I get them I will post. About 100 yards ahead Michael (ontharox) flopped his junk too. Wednesday we rode gaurdrail and helicopter pad. Thursday was all about the peckerwood connecter and Lower 2. We got caught in a viscious storm on lower 2 an there was a small stream running down the trail as we made our way up. After arriving back at camp freezing, soaked, and hungry we found that our campsite had been ravaged by the same storm. My easy up tent had become airborne hitting my truck , poking holes in my sleeping tent and finally resting on my trailer by the creek. Friday, the rock challenge at crawfords and some adult beverages. After the challenge we got out and played on the course, kenneth put on a show and aired out his hybrid a little, upon landing he blew a softball sized hole in a 44 tsl. Saturday, back to lower 2 and then ran upper 2.

Many pics were taken by other passengers so I am sure I will be amongst them somewhere. Unfortunately during my best performances people were scattering to get out of the way, not filming. All in all it was a fantastic week of wheeling hard. My rig worked very well and a had no real damage to speak of. Unless you count a few centercaps and some body massaging.

well they tried

They were there to film the rock crawling challenege at crawfords and the fields and the raffle wich will be funny to see the 19 year old kid who won the trailworks buggy. The kid seriously almost had a heart attack and died.:shaking: They filmed the stuff they could see and next year I hope with my words and some directions from the Leaders of the S4WDA they will station those camera people on the right trails. Crawfords and camera's= a much better show and more skinny pedal and attention and larger crowd.

Matt, I'll be the first to say it. Thanks for keeping your fire in check this year. Have to admitt, when I came over it one big pile of coals!

ughhhh...then what did they film? The rigs parked in the fields?
I saw them filming rig on trail 1 and I saw them filming the raffle ceremony. I can only guess they didn't have any 4x4 background since I didn't see them on helicopter pad, guardrail, schoolbus, or lower 2.

There was a photographer from 4 lo magazine there so I expect a report on the run in that.
