DIY Rear Tire Carrier for a YJ

I plan on using something poly bushing for the pivot with tube, but mount a unit bearing to the peak to hold the wheel that way I have that and a spare stub shaft with me at all times. The solution to keep the wheel from turning will be a simple 1/4 bolt....

I've built a few with the bearing spindle mt., the biggest drawbacks are the shaft diameter of the spindle and it being mounted in single shear. A lot of leverage goes against that little shaft diameter just holding up the weight of the rack and any tire size. Now add all the bouncing from highway use much less trails. In the end I didn't like the load factor on the little shaft. I ended up modding the top and using flat stock to build a double shear mount. This made the fancy bearing cap useless and made getting the bearing preload and all the related dialed in stupid. Also the tire carrier now has the ability to swing at blistering speed, enabling it to bounce off its stops, shear them off, or kill an unsuspecting girl friend or buddy on the down hill side. The spindle is no where near the diameter as a traditional trailer unit, and it all was machined from plain ol' hot rolled bar stock.

just re looked at the what they offer, hands down mega spindle or no spindle. Still not sold on the single shear design and off road pounding.
