DIY roll on paint job - ever done it?

I chose the roll on method for a couple of reasons. I had saw it on another rig, on the interior and thought it look pretty good. I went to Lowe's to buy some, was looking for the spray, but found they had it in quart cans. One of the reasons I wanted it was because of how it looked. When you look at it, it has a textured look that is different colors. From a few feet it looks like just silver, but when you look real close you can see it has black in it. The Hammered hides a lot of imperfections. Spraying took many coats, but rolling it, even though you put it on as thin as you can, is still a lot thicker than several coats of spray, and a lot cheaper. We bought one Quart, and didn't use all of it. That was somewhere in the range of $20, the second Quart came when we had a lot of scratches and so on and wanted to touch it up for the Dixie Run. You can look at some of my body damage, you will see where it has held up well, it has only cracked in the worst damage. It was slick enough that my "UPNOVER" decal and other stickers have held on well. BTW The "UPNOVER" is not a sticker. It is the if I say this right, "electrostatic" type. Has held on doing 70 up the road, hard rain, and even the wand at the car wash. Never once trying to peel off. So it is somewhat slick. Don't get me wrong, I won't or have not ever said it is a slick or as good looking as a good spray job. But I would and still do prefer it over a rattle can, that doesn't hold up, or even a MACO type paint job. It cleans up easy. A lot easier than any flat paint. Just a wipe, and it's clean. We have even "wiped" the exterior clean when it was too cold to bring out the water hose. And in doing that, it don't show scratches!

So for another trail rig, I do it again with out any hesitation.

The down side to Hammered, is that Lowe's is the only place I have found it, and they had two colors, Silver, and Black! On Rustolem's website they have many colors, but no one stocks them. Fastenal said they can get them, but you have to get a whole case. And that is still a possibility,.....The Hilton needs a a paint job! Just have not figured out what color I want to put on it.

I know of several trail rigs that carry this paint on their shell, because of what they thought of mine

ive done many of jeeps and toyota trucks.....even a newer accord haha...walmart 99cent flat black (get the whole case $20.00 or so)...sand it really good...take your time on the prep and then bomb it with the flat black spray paint. Flat black is hard to mess up or run...and it will hold up and etc just fine...the ones ive done have come out really well.

I painted mine with a roller five years ago with a small foam roller and automotive acrylic enamel and it has held up great. i did it because i got tired of fighting the rust through the walmart rattle can paint. they are right looks totally depends on the prep. with a roller the paint goes on thicker and seems to last better when being beaten of of trees. if you are tryiing to win a car show foget it if you want something to look decent and keep the rust bug at bay go for it

Well I ordered the John Deere Blitz Black, and I think I am going to try and roll it on mainly because if I try to spray it, the only place I have is in my garage, and I don't think the wife would appreciate the over spray on everything. Paint should be here in two weeks (had to order it) but I got a killer deal because my buddy works in the parts department at the local JD dealership!

you can do a cheap/affordable paint job and have it look good (relatively speaking). the way you go about doing it makes the whole difference

theres no reason to fawk it up rolling it. a cheap sprayer or the rattle can treatment can look good with a little time and effort and still be very affordable.

hey, just one more thought on this. you can make a small paint booth in your garage. Just hang some drop cloths down from the rafters and seal the corners with tape. Sweep it out real good and hose down the floor. That should take care of the dust and help with any overspray.

I used hammered silver with a paint brush on my rig and I keep spray cans of it for touch up. Hammered paint is great stuff for a rig as it shines nice and hides the imperfections really well.

I did a roll-on job on an '84 chevy stepside and it looked great! And I was lazy with the sanding. Using white made it a lot more forgiving.

I am using black, so hopefully it will work out for me. I have started sanding, and the first coat of primer should go on this week

I bought the 1 gallon container of Rustoleum Gloss Black Professional. Mix with 1-2 pints of acetone. $30 in paint only. Mix it and sprayed it with my $9.99 HF Gun

The youtube video shows a Walk Around ... 2 coats only

I didnt add in the price truck was already primer gray from awhile back, and I just lightly sanded with stuff I had here and gave it a good wash as my prep.
