I just bought a car from a guy that still owed money on it... Long story short, the dealer has to mail my bank the title and it can take up to two weeks. Anyone know if i can get a 30/45 day tag so i can drive it? I have insurance etc.

I believe you can swap one of your current plates to the new vehicle for a period of 30 days legally if you have proof of sale handy.

I may be totally off base on this, but I seem to remember someone mentioning this some time ago, because when I bought my XJ a year ago, I had to drive it down to Statesville to get it registered and was freaking out because I didnt have a tag on it the whole way, and I remember being pissed when I found out I could have temporarily tossed my TJ tag on it.

Not that I know of...

Only a dealer can issue you a temp tag

You can't just switch tags.. you would be better off not having a tag at all.

You can drive it to get it inspected but you need paperwork from the DMV and its only valid to drive to the inspection station only.

In SC you can in fact slap your tag on there for 14 days before you ahve to register it.

"Up to two weeks", in my experience, usually means 4-6 weeks. Just FYI.

If you still have the PO's tag, you can run that. He still owns the car, after all. But don't put a tag from a different vehicle on it. That's a big no-no in NC.

Does SC still let you ride around with no tag at all? I used to see cars with no tag or a sign saying "Tag Applied For" in the back glass...

From what I understand, you can do it if you no longer own that vehicle and are transferring the plates. Like I can't put the plates off of my wife's Trailblazer on a new car to drive it around, but if I sell my truck and buy a car I can run those plates.

Stolen tag is my favorite...

Ive always wanted to put a sign abakc there that said "Removed for Privacy - ask driver for info"

I got a "driving pass". Truck wouldn't pass inspection so they gave me a temp pass to drive on. No tag, just a piece of paper for when you're pulled over. Proof of insurance is required though. I think the temp pass was only for 10 days though.

That title, inspection, insurance, lien stuff is a PITA!

I have insurance on it. This is the deal...I got a loan from the bank for the car, The PO owed money on it, the bank sent the dealer a check to pay it off and release the title. The title wont be back to the bank to be put in my name/tag it for around two weeks. I really dont want to pay 14K for a car and look at it in my drive way for the first two weeks :shaking:

That's how it works.

And... like I said before, consider yourself lucky if that actually all happens within two weeks.

I transfered my insurance on my tag to my new car. Is that still a no-no to use the tag?

I do have a bill of sale etc. Ill keep my damn loan papers and the whole shabang with me if i have to!

Not exactly sure what you mean here...

But we once meant to transfer a tag from a vehicle we were selling to a vehicle we were going to buy.

We sold the first car and hung onto the tag for a few weeks until we bought the second car. But because we'd informed the insurance company that we sold the first car and they cancelled the policy, DMV would not let us transfer the tag. It tripped some kind of insurance lapse thing and kills the plate.

Then the dealership accidentally gave us somebody else's tag for the new car, and we drove around like that for a few months before anybody figured it out.

For some reason that im not quite sure of, my insurance (nationwide) will not cancel my insurance on any of my vehicles until i turn my tags in. I told her i want to keep my tag because 1. Its a "special" tag i ordered 2. I plan on using it on another vehicle. She then says she will keep my policy running until i get my new car, then swith the insurance on the tag to my new car.

Haha I:lol: bet thats a sticky situation when you get your tag ran.

That's probably why. So you should be good.
