I found out on Friday from my cousin that owns a quick lube that NC has just passed a new law. Say your tag expires in May 2016 you still have until June 15 2016 before the Po Po will ticket you. The new law is that you will receive a fine if you don't renew before the last day of the month it goes dead in. Depending on how long you wait to renew after the last day of the month depends on how much the fine will be. This goes into affect on July 1 2016.

I can't remember if he was emailed or faxed the information from the DMV. There was an outage in the inspection system on Friday and he called in about it and they sent him the information. It is being kept very hush hush he said.

I dont understand what you are saying. NC inspector here and havnt heard anything either. You have to have it inspected before you renew your tags and the property taxes are included/billed with the tags now. I also know you can't gain anything by waiting to renew because it just goes to the month on the tag.

And there's always been a potential additional fee/fine if you wait past expiration to renew. It's up to the lady at the counter whether or not they levy it.

And if there is a new law, it came from the legislature, not from the DMV.

You are correct on that. Just trying to inform all the members of what I found out as the state is not making this public as of now.
I honestly don't understand what you are saying about the new law. Could you explain a little better/differently.

EDIT, just read your edit, thanks.

I agree with the fine. Its the law to have current/correct tags and insurance. You want to drive, follow the law. No reason not to be current with all renewal options the offer. You have no idea of the cars I see with out of state tags come through the shop that are over a year out some several years. They have moved down here and never registered them.

It's a civil fine that will be added onto your renewal If you wait past the end of the month listed on your plate. Won't affect when it expires for law enforcement. I haven't seen it in writing either, just heard about it third hand.

All the above being said, it Still pisses me off, at ALL the Expired tags [by the sticker displayed] as I drive all day long! Some, Two years or more Old! I Really don't give a crap, If they bought the current sticker. I say their displaying an expired tag! Yes, many folks forget to take the Minute, to put the sticker on, but to go a Year, or Two years? Pure Negligence! :flipoff:

the fine thing isn't new, I've had to pay the $15 late fee a few times over the years. you just don't know about it unless you get hit with it. and it does seem to be hit or miss. renewing online seems to be even more so, I've been hit with it going in person ( the hassle of waiting in line AND getting a fine ) this last time I ordered online, no fine.

would also seem that 14yrs is the life expectancy of a tag, as this last time i renewed got a new tag with sticker.

There is a fee. Mine was like $18 because I got lazy and forgot to renew on time. There is also a fee for paying the taxes late. Sucks

Yup. I got out of it a couple of years ago on one of the TJs. It had been parked for a few months because the motor was blown up. The lady asked, I told her, she waived the fee and changed the expiration month on the tag. It's now June instead of November.
