I spent an hour this afternoon driving to various truck stops and rest areas. I couldn't find a map of North Carolina highways anywhere.

Free at rest stops last I checked. My dad likes to grab them, haha. Surprised you didn't find any.
I think it is only at welcome centers. I know the two off of 85 just north of concord didn't have any.

It was always fun to just write down exit numbers and you could get to a town with only a few numbers and drive around a spell till you got to your destination. GPS takes the adventure out of road trips

You can request one online. North Carolina Travel Guide - Free Visitors Guide

I get a new set of nearby states every few years. Sometimes it's easier to trip-plan if you can lay it out on the table instead of online.

I got a new GA map just last month.... one of the nicest state maps I've seen. Large (state split between front and back sides). Slick heavy paper, appears to be water resistant. Maybe my timing was right with their mailing schedule, but I got it about a week after I requested it.

You could also travel on the interwebs to find one in the Amazon.

I bought a road atlas for NC after Helene took out all the cell towers around here, and every other road was closed. Figured that may be helpful in the future in a similar scenario.

I feel like Lewis and Clark when I don’t use my GPS driving across town. A little bit of anxiety creeps in thinking I’ll miss my turn. Funny how I don’t recall that when I’d take off cross country to somewhere I’d never driven or been to before without even a map.
