Dodge Ram 50 starter problem

I have an 87 Dodge Ram D50 4x4 that won't start. The other day I went to start it to move it forward a few feet on the driveway. It hadn't started in a while, so I decided to hit the starter without the clutch pushed in to "bump" it forward a few feet. The starter engaged, and it tried to roll forward, but then I think I killed the starter. Now all it will do is click once and the dash lights light up. It's not the usual "click, click, click" that you get with a low battery.

I haven't pulled the starter yet. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else could have happened?

Also, has anyone pulled the starter on a Mitsubishi Mighty Max/ Dodge D50 that can tell me how to get access to the starter? It looks like there's a lot of stuff in the way both from the top and bottom.

Have you tried jumping the solenoid with a screw driver (very carefully)? Or smacking the starter with a wrench to free it up? If the starter is in the same spot as it is on the 2.6 in the Mitsubishi Montero/Dodge Raider your best bet is access from the bottom. I would go through a process of elimination including the solenoid and other parts before taking the starter out.

Check the positive battery cable for corrosion. Not on the terminal, necessarily, but where the wire is attached to the clamp. Clean it up there and try again.

I haven't tried either. From what it looks like, the starter and solenoid are integrated together, correct? I thought about hitting it with a hammer, but it's pretty tight under there. I had a 90 YJ with a 4 banger go through a LOT of starters, so I'm pretty used to working on them, but the YJ was a LOT easier to access stuff!

Take the POS cable off the battery and clean it, then reinstall and try again. If no-go, hit the starter and try it again. It that's a no-go, you're fucked.
