Does the engine need rebuilding or is it something else?

My 78 f150 blows white smoke out of one tail pipe (driver side). Its a 400 bb. When I gas it, it blows smoke. I look like I am driving down a dry path with all the smoke behind me. Which is great when someone rides my tail, I just gas it and smoke em out:flipoff2: Think I should rebuild or replace the motor. The tail pipe drips oil a little bit after I drive it. What do ya'll think, is rebuilding worth it or get another one?

How much oil does it use and does the smoke clear after you drive for a while. Could be valve guide seals. And are you adding coolant. Remove oil fill cap after it is hot and see if there is a lot of smoke and oil film
If so could be rings and or cyl.

It doesnt use much oil and the smoke is all the time, when I hit the gas the smoke comes out more, the harder I get on it the more and thicker it comes out, haven't checked the coolant but will. After I shut the engine off I get about 1/4 of a cup of oil that drips out of the tailpipe then it stops I guess after it cools off.

^ Hey shouldnt you be working?

*Edit meant for 2 up*
Are we THAT slow?

really its more like blue smoke havent really put the dripping in a cup to see if theres any seperation. seems more oily cant really tell if theres water i will check on that

Blue smoke is probably a blown head gasket, or cracked head.

x2 on checking the coolant, and checking to see if the tail pipe drip is water or oil.

If you can't tell if it's white or blue, the white smoke will dissipate a lot faster than the blue.
As said, blue is oil, and white is water.
White meaning either a blown head gasket, or a cracked head.
The black oil you are seeing is most likely the carbon build up in your exhaust pipe being steam cleaned from the water(coolant).
You can also see whitish smoke from an auto tranny. I have seen them when the tranny is going out, and pushing fluid into the vacuum system. If you have a duel plane intake, this could also show out of just one side.

SMELL TEST
Smells sweet its water, smells smoky its oil, smells gassy its rich (or you had too many beans)

Get it tested, most shops will have combustion leak check. It goes over the rad. to check for exhaust gases in the rad to check for a bad head gasket.
