I donoo about the xjs but on my k5 i just got some replacement pins and drilled them to fit a tiny cotter pin. they just pop out when i wanna take the doors off

Disclaimer: Modifying the door hinges weakens the safety integrity of the door in a side impact. I suggest that this modification only be done on off road vehicles. Any modifications you do must be at your own risk and discretion.

I began by removing the doors by loosening the six torx head bolts that hold each door to its hinge. I carefully marked the hinge location so I could put it back in it original location.

Removing the torx head bolts is a bit tricky as there is not always enough room to get the bit square with the bolt head. I stripped on torx bit while removing my doors. I also resorted to cutting one bolt head off with a cut off wheel when it stripped out the splines of the bolt head.

With the doors out of the way, I used a cut off wheel to cut the bottom fork of each door hinge. I used a hammer to tap it off the pivot pin. I then cut off the part of the pin that stuck through. Then I carefully tapped the top part of the hinge off leaving the hinge pin in place in the hinge.

I then used a drill to ream the hole in the hinge mount slightly so that the pin would now slide in place instead of being a pres fit. I also cut the pin on the top hinge slightly shorter than the bottom to aid in reinstalling the door. Alternately you could use bolts to replace the pins and weld them in place. I may do this in the future as the hollow hinge pins may not hold up to repeated removals.

The flange around the hinge mount on the door itself will interfere when trying to line up the pins when reinstalling the doors, so I cut part of it away for added clearance.

Next I reinstalled the hinge halfs on the doors and tightened the bolts putting the hinges back on the marks made earlier.

To reinstall the doors, simply place the lower hinge pin over the bottom hole and then line up the top pin and lower the door into place.

sounds good to me I saw i thing on trucks or x-tream 4x4 where the just made tabs like a wrangler and cut the hing off its self an welded wrangler hinges on.. Ill look into your idea cause its sounds a bit easier.......T-40 torx bit with 3/8 ratchet head.. take a 8mill ratchet wrench and put on the torx part where it looks like a nut.... smaller size fits perfect. easy breezy lol.....any one else with a different idea maybe a like or pics of it

If you guys get any pics of this I would love to see them cause I would love to do this to my doors. Mine is a DD but I want to take my doors of so bad.

if i can figure it out ill gladly post pics and pm you about it but every where im looking its cutting an welding new tabs and im not that advanced i dont think. i dunno i havent seen any pics besides the finished product

i took a toarch, heated the area of the hinge around the pin, then immediatly knocked the factory pin out with punch anh hammer. Replace them with some tractor supply pins. works fine

i found a few afte actually looking and yeah up to 97 heavy metal looks the best for dd and a lil figureing out would prolly work on 98+.....anyone disagree??

yeah if i get to move the jeep again lol.. Like i said if you dont see the jeep look for a red 02 4dr civic at books. Ill hollar at you if you ride buy an i see you. AND does this actually last a good while or do u have to keep replacing them so they work with ease

i have done the mod and the only bad thing i think is trying to put them back on i cant seem to do it by myself lol the dam doors are hevey. is there any way to make them lighter

Gut em, but it won't help much, could always chop em up and make some half doors.

My brother loves taking his off, unfortunately that means anytime the forecast predicts rain he finds his way to my house, so I can help put them on. Gets annoying after 3x in 4 days lol
