i am wanting a plasma cutter and i have a Lincoln stick welder that has only been used say 3 times is this a good trade its a nice welder and i dont want a big plasma just something small if need be i can get pics

What brand of Plasma?
Is Stick AC or AC/DC?
220V I imagine?

I have a Lincoln AC stick welder that I gave like $100 for used. But wouldn't take $500 for it cause it is the most dependable thing besides the Earth to remain spinning. But AC Lincoln "Buzz Box's" can be had for $100-150 all day used. Only like $250 new. But the reason Lincoln hasn't changed them at all in the past 20 years is because they are indestructible. And did I mention dependable?

Price wise if the plasma is anything name brand then this is a very good deal. But I dislike plasmas for they are NOT dependable... But did find out there's $40 worth of copper in one if you take 3 hours to cut it all out...

Hope that helps?

How so? My parker metalworks one has been going strong for over 10 years now.

Might have just been my bad luck? My Snap-On YA2230 was in and out of the shop so much I could have bought 2 of them before I scrapped it the last time it went out. I know of a vendor on here that ditched their plasma as well for same purposes in favor of just using a torch. Consumables will kill you and a torch will light EVERY time if you got gas. Plus, a torch will reach past the power supply cord which is supposed to be limited to less than 8-10 feet (depending on awg of wire). And that's stretching it...

Maybe if you bought a 2K machine with a warranty would be much different. But I HIGHLY doubt that's what in the market for trade in this thread???

My plasma was used to begin with and lasted about 10 years exactly from it's manufacture date. :) I had it for a year.

Just my 2...

so lets say i have a long pice of thick ibeam i want cut in half i have no torch so do i go old school on it and cut it with the welder. the pice is like 30ft long

I've cut so much stuff with a steady hand and an angle grinder. Its messy, stinks, loud as hell, but it will work.

How big is the I beam? You might be able to invest in a portaband and justify it. I want a plasma, but a quality tool will make the other options look almost free.

Chop saw?

n0 30 inches but 30 foot it is very long lol but you did just give me an idea what about a skill saw with a metal blade

How about clamping or even tacking a stick of angle iron down the length of the I-beam to act as a guide, and cut it with a sawsall?

I'd have to say with an ibeam a torch is the best bet.

Really an angle grinder isn't all that bad. If you have a steady hand there will be less clean up and grinding after cutting it.

But, you can get a cutting rod and just cut it that way. Of course more grinding involved.

so a sawsall sounds good how much dose a concrete saw cost to rent or should i go find out on my own and leave you nice ppl alone lol

Chances are, anybody with a plasma cutter for sale probably already has a welder. You find somebody with a $300 Cut 50 chinese plasma that they're upgrading to a Hypertherm and you might get lucky. That said, I picked up a Cut 50 cheap. Works great for the occasional user. I'd rather have a Hypertherm, but them's the breaks.
