Dove Hunt

Oh yeah got a nice lil field planted had plenty of birds on the wire since last friday...now if the rains will only get the hell away....

I'll be there if the rain don't run us away.

I wish my buddies from SC called to try and convince me to come down for the opening day hunt. We always do it up big with a BBQ/cookout after the hunt. My mom had surgery this weekend so we are going to see her instead. Family first.

Although in the field next to my house they are all over the place, almost teasing me.

I have not seen a whole bunch of birds this year. I normaly hunt near the house, but don't know where the birds went. (Last year only saw about 8 birds all opening day.)

That sucks, don't know where you are huntin, but that's terrible - if you feed them, they will come - we have a ton of them, fields have been planted and cut already - let the massacre begin!!!

Man that sounds like fun!! I am in Michigan for a week to kill Geese (sept.1-15 is the early season) Already have 2 fields lined up with about 500 birds total. I am expecting the barrell of my 10 gauge to melt, so then I will have to use the 12 gauge as a backup.......yeah!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck to all the hunters out there!

YES THEY WILL!!!

Specially if you cut a week early add in some extra seed and then turn and cover Friday...

Or....Mr. Officer.... I have ben told that works well in some places

Figured this was a good place to ask this. First let me admit that I will pretty much hunt anything that moves, but mostly deer and rabbit. I've been dove hunting a couple of times and had a blast. I am looking at getting some land and I'm curious what do you plant for doves? In the past I have actually sat in a sunflower field for them, but what is considered ideal dove habitat? Also do doves need a water source near by? If you don't know can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

we plant millet.
Wheat will also work.
Ive never tried sunflowers but know some that swear by them.

Water?
nah they will find it.

They are a migratory bird. You are only killing them as they are passing through. Its not like they are gonna hang around long.

For the tim of your life book a trip to argentina on a dove shoot...

And bring icy hot for the shoulder..

Good Luck and Safe Hunting to all Saturday.

never been bird hunting as my stepdad (the one who got me into hunting) was a quail hunter, and as we all know the quail population depleted severly. so we're stuck with deer around here, although ill probally try dove and duck this year, and take the pup out next year as he should be ready.

If only the doves flew a little slower I might have a chance with my weapon......A Redtail Hawk! Too bad I let him go over the summer, he was an Awesome bird. Gonna trap me a new one since trapping season starts 09/04/06.

No....no pet. They tame down fairly easy but not enough for a pet! Their talons are like razors and their grip is like.......putting your hand in a vise and tightening down as hard as possible.
I have my Falconry license and use the bird to hunt squirrels, rabbits, pheasants (if we're lucky), or just about anything that moves. The right setup on ducks is tough but can be done. Oh yeah, those gray heroins sometimes get in the way too.

Falconry

That is just too cool. No sore sholder from the 12 gauge. No game filled with lead, you can actually eat it! Does that hawk work on geese? You would have a field day!

Fred

(mon bring on the doves)

You might could get a LARGE female redtail to take geese. It all depends on how confident they are. The older the bird gets, the more confident they get. Someone elses bird actually got a fox.......not something I want to deal with. Trying to catch the fox and put it down before the bird gets hurt all while trying not to get bitten....no thanks. Once the birds lock onto a critter, they dont let go! Its really a lot of fun!
