Working on the Jeep this weekend and found I have a LOT of water in the gas tank. Due to the age and trash I am finding in the filter it's probably best to replace the tank and possibly the lines. What is the best way to drain it? I thinking removing the filler neck tube and siphoning, anyone have any other suggestions?
Metal or poly replacement?

(hooked a hose to the metal gas line and put into a clear container, turn the engine over and it is pumping lots of water with the gas, bummer for me...)

If you are going to drain everything and change filter I would just drop the tank then siphon then you could change the soft lines too

I would drop the tank out, we have a 78 CJ at work right now that we wish we could get the fuel cell out of since it is full of rust and bad gas but someone welded it to the tub.

I appreciate the replies. I plan to drop the tank to see if I can clean it but will replace it if to far gone. It is half full, figured it would be easier to handle if empty. If I can't get the gas out I'll use a floor jack to help with the weight.

Quadtec.com has a metal tank for $139, know of any other suppliers I can check out?

prop some 2x4s on the top of the axle slanted towards the back then when you drop the tank it will drop onto the 2x4's and you can gently let it slide down the boards instead of you having to hold all the weight. I bet if you drain it and nock some of the rust out with marbles or similar technique the tank will be fine.

If anyone is interested...tank is down. Turns out it is a poly tank, removed the pickup from the tank and was able to get my arm inside to clean it out good. I did get slightly less than half gallon of water out. Water was getting in through the two vent grommets on the top of the tank. Tank is in good shape but the skid plate is shot. Will post in the parts wanted but if anyone has or knows of a skid plate for 15 gallon tank I'm interested.
