Drill Hog

Thanks for posting this and it's timely as I fought with a broke cheap bit for over an hour yesterday.

I've never invested in quality bits, and not as educated as I'd like. I know you have a ton of machine experience so....

For general use on the type stuff we do, what would you recommend the moly m7, cobalt, or pig steel "sets"?

The Drill Doctor does a decent job if the drill just needs a sharping. If the 118 degree angle is way off then the Dr won’t get the drill back to cutting with out a lot of effort. I use my Dr for drills 3/16 to about 1/2 an inch. Anything smaller and I just throw the dull ones away. Anything larger and I use my Sterling drill sharpener.

I've owned a Drill Dr for about 20-25 years. I love it. I was drilling a 1/2" hole in my Jeep frame yesterday, and it wasn't cutting worth a damn. A few minutes with the Dr, and it was throwing chips and went through the frame easy.

a small set of left twist bits is good investment as well

many times a broken bolt will self extract with just drilling in with a left twist.

flatten the broken bolt end and center punch if you can, then drill as straight as possible. I do this frequently on equipment I repair.
