Can someone give me an experienced opinion on driving Hwy 220, pulling a trailer, from Greensboro to I-81 north of Roanoke? I have always taken the I-77/I-81 route in the past, but Google shows this to be considerably shorter. ThanX! :)

220 isn't bad. Slows down some coming into Martinsville but I used to make that run with the Boy Scouts all the time. Nice, 4 lane most of the way. I could make it from my house to the airport in under 2 hours and be hiking at Dragon's Tooth in 2.5.

I used to run it twice a day in a big truck, lot's of rolling hills and two curves that will get your attention. Beware of people traveling the wrong way in your lane!

I have run the length of 220 dozens of times. Its smooth and easy jusy dont speed around asheboro. There is a new crossover on the north end that keeps you out of greensboro traffic. I always run up 52 to the 74 crossover. Never had any trouble even running 10k over.

Pay attention to the speed limit in Boone's Mill, VA especially M-Fri 8-5...it drops in town and the sheriff is always collecting revenue.

Speed traps in Boone's Mill and Roanoke. The interstate stub from I-81 to Roanoke is wide, flat, and 55mph. I think Boone's Mill is 35. Other than that, it's typical VA hwy... four lanes, usually divided, a few stop lights, some curves, some hills. Pretty nice drive, all things considered.

one thing I have learned in my allmost 20 years of travelling doing reenactments..Virginia roads are either 4 lane highways or hog paths.

Don, right above Martinsville you can stop on the left and buy firewood and get free water (fuel for steam)!
