Headed to the OBX to due the taxes this weekend. I have been back in the ninties when driving on the beach was a free thing. I am wondering if it is worth taking the XJ for a 7 hr road trip with the wife with no heat or air. It looks like I can dive for free up to carova and a little around kill devil hills. Is it worth the 14hrs of the wife bitching about being cold to drive around on the sand for an hour or two ?

To me, no its not worth the bitching. Keeping the wife happy is important. That's the ONLY reason I'm thinking of renting a car in may for our trip to the mountains.

I haven't done any beach driving since the imposed the permits. For me it was just the convenience of having everything with me when I set up on the beach for the day. I wouldn't consider it fun or technical or exploratory driving. Now I just carry my chair and cooler...and if I want to grab a rod or something else, I take the 5-10 minute walk back to the parking lot.

ya it's not worth it.

I mean WOOHOO i'm driving on the flat sand loom at me.

The thrill really isn't there for me. Plus the $50 or whatever it costs.

The folks I see driving on the beach these days are the same high school kids that like to leave the cool splash of mud on the side of their truck from that puddle they ran through...or the deisel ricer guys with chips on their chips and chips on their tow mirrors.

I'm out of the loop. Do you have to pay for a permit to go out on the beach nowadays? A few years back it was no-cost (at least at the north entrance by Corolla). In the summer, I like going on the beach and getting away from people...

Corolla/corova no permit is needed to drive on the beach because that is the only access to the houses and rental houses up there. Everything south of that permits are needed.

I would say not. This time of the year your not going to be spending a lot of time on the beach. I love taking our jeep to the OBX and having all the shit right there. Not having to carry anything. I loath toting anything across the sand more than 15ft. So, in that case, worth it. But, on the other hand. It's my wife's jeep with heat and air. So YMMV
