Drone for kids

Looking to get my soon to be 8 year old a drone for his birthday. Ideally around $100-150. Looks like I can get a DJI Tello for that, but would like something with and independent controller so it's not phone dependent. I see used higher end DJIs for $200+, but that's more than I want to spend and who knows what quirks I might be inheriting with a used drone. What's the wisdom of NC4X4?

Not sure how long you have until the birthday, but BetaFPV is a good place to start. I have purchased from them in the past and they have good prices.
