Dual Sports...

i've got a tag on my ktm 450. Not really a dual sport. but damn fun!!

Dual sports

i have no idea what this thread is about...
I play kickball and occasionally tennis. Does that count?

Too late, found a great deal (or so i think) on an 08' KLR 650 and have read lots of good reviews on them. Rode it home tonight, rides great and would max out less than 120mph which is a good thing :D Had it to around 90 and it was kind of shaky (dirt treads on it), so that is a good thing. 70-80mph it does great, good power, handles great, the headlight is as good (or better) than any of the sportbikes I have owned...

Can't wait to take it to Uwharrie...

I've got an XT350 and a DR350, dad has a KLX650, and his dual sport buddy has a KLR650. The KLR is a much better streetbike, the XT/DR/KLX are much better dirtbikes. The biggest difference is suspension, and highway speed vibration.

i wouldnt consider a 650 a dual sport but thats just me. a dual sport is a bike that you can actually hit the trails with and a klr650 is a pig. good bike for ADV type riding though

KTM's, ATK's, and Huskies are all excellent machines, but they are also considered the most performance oriented. The parts for each are higher and require more specific maintenance and are more of a racers breed of bike. The Kawi's Honda's and Suki's all make very reliable fun dual sports. If I had the money for the bike and its maintenance I'd go for one of the KTM Dakar Rally Inspired bikes, but well over 10 grand just doesn't seem justifiable.

I've been eyeing the DRZ-400SM for a while. I was going to pick one up at a great price a few months ago, but I got a call as I was pulling out of my driveway with the trailer hooked up saying that it had just been sold. Guess it wasn't meant to be, but now I can't stomach paying $800-$1500 more than the deal I thought I was going to get a while back.

Yep.

That 650 is a heavy pig. I had a DR650 for a while. Every time I took it in the woods it kicked my ass.
I'm not the best rider by any means...but after about the 5th or 6th time that thing fell on me and I had to pick it up in a day I was about done...

I'm wanting a DRZ400...anybody want a '07 ZX-6R?

URE really isn't that great of a place to ride a motorcycle in my opinion. Athough I use to do it a lot back in the day. Head up to Brown Mountain. The trails are much better for a motorcycle.

I had a DRZ-400 for a while and really enjoyed it. I am by no means a good rider in the dirt, and it didnt really do anything to make me any better.....but, on the road, i loved it. Great mileage, just enough power to be fun on the backroads, and handled better than any motorcylce i have ever been on. If i was a better dirt rider i would probably still have it, but it felt like a waste to only ride a dual sport on the street.

I would love to have a DRZ400SM though...

I like the low height of the DRZ400SM over the taller DRZ400S. Seems like a great city bike. Like a scooter that can comfortably hit the highway and loves to pull wheelies. I haven't even ridden one yet, but after sitting on it in the showroom and reading some reviews I know that's what I want for my next bike.

I had a BMW F650 Dakar a while back. Great bike in a lot of ways, but way too heavy for any actual offroad riding. It was a great highway bike and it was cool being able to soak up curbs like they were just another bump in the road, but that bike was a pig. When it started leaning it took some muscle to keep it from tipping. It would be great in a wide open space (like the Dakar rally), but you'd wear yourself out trying to keep it moving on anything technical.

I doubt I will be doing much straight up trail riding. I wanted something that Rebecca can ride with me and be comfortable on for trips to Hanging Rock, out to eat, etc. Didn't think a 400 would have the power to go highway cruising for any length of time. Also, being that I am 6'6 the bigger bike 'fits' me a little better. I know Uwharrie is not a great place for bikes due to all the rocks, but if I take it down there I will be riding with guys in trucks, not out to get crazy with it as I have not ridden many dirtbikes so I won't be going too fast. I want it for places like Mtn city, and also to bring with me to the races to have to run an pickup parts if needed.

Took it through the woods at my parents house today, through a small creek, some hills (not steep). I can say the gearing sucks for slow woods riding, lots of clutching which I guess is normal for any bike, but it just isn't geared low enough for slow stuff. Faster trails it would do fine (for as fast as *I* would ride it), still like it after my short ride today, rides really good too.

The 400 accelerates well, but that is a product of its gearing. It will run basically 100 before it is revved out. 75 or so on the highway is doable, but the vibes from turning that many rpms gets kinda old after a little while.

If you plan on doing much highway riding, the 650 is much better suited to that.

Regear it with some sprockets, they are fairly cheap. But I'd do it when I replaced the chain. Dropping a front tooth is pretty close to changing ten in the rear, I think.
