How much should it cost to have HVAC ducts cleaned in a 8 year old 3200 sqft house? Just need a ruff idea so I don't get screwed.

I usually budget $1/sq ft but it usually ends up being about $.75/sq ft, sometimes less. Just depends on the house and duct and how dirty it really is.

Let me dig through my paperwork. I'll get you within $100 or so.

That's if I (with another well experienced tech) comes from Lexington SC to do it.

@XJsavage not sure what BM and EC is sorry no experience in the HVAC field.
Blower Motor and Evaporater Coils. That as we call it is a "full system" cleaning. We pull and disassemble both blower motors assemblies and give them a good pressure washing and then reinstall. The coils inside the unit and if need be, the outside condenser coils will be cleaned with a fine tooth comb.

You can probably find cheaper locally but I can assure you it wont be the same quality.

Would you recommend that for 1 1/2 year old systems? The house is 8 years old and had major issues with one of the systems and got pissed and replaced both last summer.

I just got a quote from advanta clean a couple weeks ago. I have 10 vents and they quoted me 500 and some change.... that included the anti microbial fogging/spray.

I have a small house though.....

If your ducts are under the floor pull one of the floor grills out and stick a camera or phone down in duct and take some pictures. If you have a packaged unit outside disconnect power and take off side panels to look at blower and coil. Take more pictures. Some units have panels labeled "blower" some don't. Some units require taking top off. If you have an indoor air handler ( split system ) turn off power and remove panels. You are looking for dirt and or mold. Post pictures or send them to me .

I don't think they are very dirty this is the wife's idea.

Mold grows on the dirt/dust that's in the ducts or in the units.

If there is little dust or dirt, or little mold, then there is nothing to clean and would make a very small change for the investment of having it done.

That said, if it needs to be done, then that investment will be worthwhile.

Mold/dirt blocking the coil is the same as a dirty filter as far as efficiency.

Good advice here. When the new system was installed last year the technicians said the ducts were very clean for the age of the house. We have a family member staying with us over the holidays that's allergic to everything so the wife wants them cleaned. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow of the coils and post them up. Thanks again for the wealth of knowledge and willingness to be of help to our offroad community.

Do you have carpet, or indoor pets and do you replace the filters at regular intervals ? If the house is clean and hardwood etc. floors and filters managed your system may be very clean.

I had 4 quotes before I had my new system installed. Asked each one what they thought of duct cleaning, as that was the Rage at that time in Advertising. The general feeling, was it wasn't needed! 1200 Sq.Ft., decent filter, no pets, hard ducts, 1/2 hardwood & 1/2 carpet. The company I went with, told me I "might" have some initial dust blow out, as the New fan would blow stronger than the old one. That seemed a bit of over-concern, as the New fan ramps up slowly, vs the old 1 speed at full song. I haven't noticed any difference in dust or my hay-fever!

Thanks for all the info on this subject. Contacted a hvac tech buddy of mine to check the system out for the need of cleaning yesterday. He checked everything up one side and down the other and said there is absolutely no reason for wasting the money on cleaning our system at this time as it is extremely clean as of now. Didn't know it at the time but the company he works for offers duct cleaning services.
