i am about to install a dpf delete from turbo back to open up the hp. i only want it for the fuel efficiency and pulling ability not for racing around. i know ill need to have a tuner to delete the codes, but do i need to keep it all the time or can i borrow someones tuner and program mine and give it back?
also im looking for the best options as far as the good kits go. i am focusing now on the afe model due to its price. is there something better out there that is possibly cheaper?
any advice would help.

I'd just have someone with HP Tuners or EFI live turn them off. Might as well get a tune done while you're at it. You don't have to get a 6 position or anything, but a simple tweak here and there should do it.

If you were closer, I could help you out.

so its just a matter of plugging in and having someone disable the codes? no need to run a tuner all the time.

Basically. You have to license the truck, but that's only 100 bucks with HP Tuners and after that, you're free to do whatever you need within the software's capabilities.

I bought the software so I can data log with a wideband, email it to a tuner, and he can send me a revision to the tune. Besides the tuning aspect, it also has a full VCM controller and OB2 II scanner. It was a big initial expense and it runs on a lap top, but it was worth it to me. I can change tire size, gear ratio, enable or disable virtually any code the ECM reads, etc.

interesting. so i can use my laptop as the tuner if i want to change things or need to trouble shoot codes. and thats covered under the 100.00 license fee or is that also extra? im sorry for these questions. im just new to the tuner thing and dont want to get to a point where i destroy something and it cost me even more. or be sitting on the side of the road because i need the tuner to do something. thanks again

That's if you purchased one of the software packages. It also comes with an OBD II box to communicate with the vehicle. Total investment in my stuff was 650 bucks. It's probably not worth it for you to buy it, so I would just get someone who has it to disable the codes for you.

k. thanks for the info. ill see if i can find someone who can help. if you know of anyone please let me know. and one more question. if i do get the pipes and dont find anyone right away to delete the codes, will it hurt anything on the truck?

It shouldn't. Obviously, it won't function any more, which is the intent. I'd just guess it'll just have a MIL/CEL on all the time. I can't say for sure though, I don't know if these newer trucks have some kind of system that will disable them from operating without it.

Don't take the DPF off without a tune. It may not go into limp mode right away but it will very soon after you remove it. As far as I know, the only two options for delete tuning are H&S and EFI Live. There may be other options out there, but those are the only two I would consider using. Get a reputable tuner to write you an EFI Live tune. You will get the best fuel mileage that way. You have to disable the DPF system in the ECM. You will have to run the tune the entire time the DPF is removed. Have you bought exhaust yet? You can use exhaust for an 01-07 Duramax which will give you more options and more than likely lower pricing. Feel free to call me with any questions you have.

Ahh, yep, figured it would have a fail safe to keep it from being messed with.
