Was pulling the trail rig back from URE last Saturday and long story short, I only have 1st & 2nd gear now ('96 F-350 Powerstroke). I see 4 options to getting back to towing:
1 - swap in a junkyard tranny and hope for the best
2 - build the E40D to be bullet proof
3 - swap in a built allison (1000 series?)
4 - swap in a built manual tranny (ZF5 or ZF6)

Any other options out there?
If it was your tow rig, what would you do?

Right now I'm leaning towards option 2 (building the E40D). Does anybody have any recommendations for a shop that specializes in beefing up these transmissions until they are 'bullet-proof'?

TIA,
Brandon

1 - swap in a junkyard tranny and hope for the best - ehh, wouldnt do it
2 - build the E40D to be bullet proof - do you really need a 'built' transmission
3 - swap in a built allison (1000 series?) - too much money
4 - swap in a built manual tranny (ZF5 or ZF6) - i dont see anyone with <750whp needing a built manual

I would go for a mild rebuild on your current trans and keep on truckin'

putting in a junk yard unit is a waste of money(will have same issues)
putting in an allison is a waste of money(the cost vs. building yours)
the manual conversion would be expensive and what would you gain

i suggest building the one you have. with the proper updates and good parts the e4od is a great transmission. a good torque converter is one of the most important things on that trans.(if used as a tow vehicle, a billet cover and anti-balloon plate is a must)

Any other things I should look for in a built/mildly-built E40D?

Durnzuki,
Where did you get yours? Thoroughbred Diesel?
Do you have any complaints?
Anything you would recommend upgrading (valve body, torque converter, etc.)?

I sent you a PM on the info. I didnt use Thoroughbred, I used Ford the first time and, local guy the second and American Transmission the last. The last two times I had every uprade the made for towing put in it including a high dollar billit T/C and I wouldnt take a used bicycle to American transmission. I HAVE heard good things about transman731 so I would give him a chance before I went anywhere else.

We built mine in the Excurison. Built converter, upgraded shell, alto reds, upgraded output shaft, time delayed soilonds.....love it but only tow around 7,000lbs.
