This followed me home Saturday. I believe I found a open top DJ-5 postal jeep?

Maybe not? I am lost when it comes to CJ type jeeps. All info is appreciated. (Possible trans/motor/year?

Details are
4cyl, manual
2wd
No title currently so I don't know year of manufacture.

Late 50's to early 60's (maybe 54-62 range but don't quote me exactly on that) Kaiser built cj5. Looks like the hurricane I4 engine. Search on that and you'll get tons of info. Earlycj5.net for experts on these. Looks nice with not much rust. Nice find.

Thanks for the website I'll have to check it out, Wouldn't the 85 in the vin ( first two numbers) makes it a DJ instead of a Cj-5 which is 83

????

Searching this kind of stuff is always interesting. Ijust guessed on the hood making it a pre-72 CJ5. I did a little digging on that VIN. These old ones are a bitch to track down. Check these links out.

As I said post this thing up on the earlycj5.net site in the early CJ5 (pre-72) research link and they'll be all over this. It looks like you are spot on, DJ-5 (not a postal jeep), 2wd. Kind of an odd bird I guess. Not sure the 2wd is very useful but kinda neat find nonetheless. If that 2nd link pdf is correct, it was built in March of '65. The 8505A/B column is probably the one to look at but the A and B are not completely clear to me. Post a pic of the tranny and front axle. I've never seen one without a TC or a front diff. I wondered what it looks like underneath.

The hood makes it an late 50's, early 60's Kaiser built Jeep. (note no battery box lid on the cowl) The engine is an F-Head, called a Hurricane. I dont know if the DJs after '53, (after the flatfenders), had 7 slots. But the two wheel drive thing is curious! Might be that a DJ was simply a two wheel drive CJ at that time?

Very Nice fore it's age! Though DJ were Postal, but I never knew much about them or 2 wh dr. I do see the voltage reducer even though the battery looks 12V. Reducer could be for ignition, lights [6V] or both.

LOOKIE!!!

This Jeep got me curious. Found this at http://cj3b.info/Siblings/DispatcherDJ5.html

"DJ-5 (1965-1973)

acj3b.info_Photos_Dispatcher_1966DJ5JHuey300.jpg
In 1965 Kaiser Jeep replaced the DJ-3A Jeep Dispatcher with the DJ-5 "Dispatcher 100", a two-wheel drive version of the CJ-5. This photo of a 1966 example is courtesy of jhuey. Like the CJ-5 of that era, the DJ was available with the F-head four cylinder or the Dauntless V-6; see a DJ-5 spec sheet (20K GIF).

There was also a long-wheelbase DJ-6; Jim Allen says in Illustrated Buyer's Guide: Jeep that "It was built in almost equal numbers to the DJ-5. The big question is, where are they now?"

The U.S. Postal Service bought some DJ-5's, with hardtops and modifications including right-hand drive, door sills modified for easy access, and spare tires missing from the right side, to provide clearance for sliding doors and mailboxes. See also the interior (200K JPEG) including dash-mounted automatic transmission.

Thanks to Lem Watson for the photos."

FYI...Also from this site..The Postal Jeeps were DJ-5 A thru M. So id say its a 65-67 DJ5. The second part of the serial number will narrow the year search.

Very Rare, I believe!

Neat to learn something everyday!!:D
