Are there any 4cyl trucks, SUVs, etc, that are worth a crap for occasional towing of a boat...and for just riding around...
and gets decent gas mileage?

Figure I might as well ask since anything I mention sucks in some way or another.
Even some of the SUVs that are 6 cyl have some sort of weak point.

My guess would be that EVERYTHING will have some little hiccup that needs to be addressed.

We used to pull a 17 ft Sunbird for around 5 years with a 4cyl. 1994 nissan with no real problems except on the real steep ramps

We pulled a 16ft. bass boat for a long time with a 1986 Toyota 2wd. 4cyl. Occasionaly had to replace the clutch, but no other real issues.

amazing how I am getting ripped for wanting to swap my 1991 F150 Custom 4x4 for a 1996 4cyl 5 speed nissan reg cab...
I just wanted something with decent gas mieage and occasional boat towing and possibly drive back and forth to work in and keep miles off of the family car...
our CR-V...but everyone is tearing apart anything I can come up with to swap for.
a 2wd truck in 4cyl should be fine...

I would say that if your not towing a long ways, then a 4 banger should be good.
I used to pull my boat with my s-10 six cylinder for only about 25 miles round trip i wouldnt think bout doing it too much more then that.

probably isn't even 15 miles round trip...
Now I need the trade to go through. I'm just waiting on cass92lx50 to give me the green flag. I absolutely love his Nissan. Soon as he says yes, I'll go meet him and swap. My desires for vehicles is almost complete. A small 2wd import truck was on the list. All that is left is a 90s model 300Z and I think I may mark it off...
2 kids kinda makes that less than possible...
I really have nothing beyond that. I got a 68 mustang that was bought new for my mom when she turned 16 and it has stayed in the family...my dad has restored a 51 mercury 4 door...

I have towed ALOT of weight w/ my 96 Taco 4 cyl. Say 3/4 of a bed of landscape rock down from Jefferson. 10-12 times. Got the bent overload to prove it.

Braking is the main concern for me.

I went the other day and looked at a new Toy 4 cyl and with the 5 speed it had all the power you would need and would work fine. Fuel is good Price is good, about 15.5K for a 2wd king cab with some trim and nice radio and air. It rides good and they have a 2K rebate on them, plus they want to sell them. I towed a 16 foot boat all the time with a Mazda and had no problem, it was in 88 and was a 4 banger, this Toy has more power and lots nicer........

Darn...I had seen a sweet Mazda ext cab that was the older pre-Ford style that I passed up becasue everyone here kept on and on about how I couldn't pull crap with it or stop anything...

I think I have my decision made for me...I just have to watch for a deal again...
