i don't know a thing about these things just need to know what every anyone can tell me about them and if they are worth $600 truck and all. They are in a 47 milatary power wagoon 1 1/2 ton. I want them to put under a 3/4 ton chevy. would they be worth getting for that or too much work? Thanks guys

I think I read in petersons that these were the early 14 bolt
something about swaping spider gears to get a better spline count also if I'm not mistaken they are a third member type like a ford 9" but the back sied of the axle is bolted instead of welded so in theory you could swap third member & pan & creat a high pinion

I think but it's been a while since I read about these

Jeff B is right, to an extent... the "eaton" (HO52/HO72) axle is the predessor(sp?) to the 14 bolt. (found in 3/4 ton-1 ton chevy's from the 50's through the early 70's)

You can replace the spider/side gears/shafts with 14 bolt stuff (detroit), but the ring gears are not interchangable. The third members are removable (similar to a 9") and came with three gear sets (4:11, 4:56, 5:13) but they are no longer being made, so finding replacements may be tough.. Bearings/seals are still available.

 *You can't make a hi-pinion just by flipping the third to the back side of the housing, unless your planning on using it as a front axle (hmmm, eaton center with 60 outers:huggy: ) or your running a rear engine set-up.. even then there's the oiling issues to deal with...

as for the power wagon axle, i have no idea  (i don't think its the same axle, but no way to confirm it right now)

i would just by a 14 bolt, regear it, disc brakes, and detroit for the $600 your looking to spend. You'll be "just like everybody else" BUT atleast somebody will have spares on the trail.

and search, we've tallked about this before.
