this jeep is for sale and i would ask with these 37 tires and front/rear drum brakes, if purchased, does anyone suspect i would have to add disc brakes for stopping power or are the older cj drum brakes functional? i emailed the guy selling it and he just told me he got it on a trade and hasn't driven it much, but that it does drive well, stated you "need to anticipate your stops" he's in Massachusetts. thx for anyone's input.

It depends on what you want to do with it. First off, that's a CJ-5, not a 7. A stock wheelbase CJ-5 on 37s is going to be really tipsy. Those stock axles will not hold up long with the 37s if you take it anywhere other than the mall. Also the 3.73 gears won't help much either. If you get it, I'd go down in tire size for sure

brian that's a ton of help and i really appreciate the input. just saved me 5900 plus 800 to ship it. thanks again and take care, scott

All the stuff that ^ said is spot on. I had a 76 CJ7 that had drums in the front and I converted it to discs because they were very poor for stopping. Even after converting it, it was still poor. I would guess it went from 2/10 up to a 3.5/10.

You planning on wheeling the Jeep?

if you are asking me, i am wanting to get a cj to wheel but not this one thanks to above-mentioned information and help. thx, scott

It's a nice looking, clean jeep. Just sell the tires, get ones proportioned correctly for a CJ5 and drop swap in some disc brakes. Not too much work. If you're scared of work, then don't get a CJ.

Notice the term "manual" drum brakes. My 79 came with manual disc/drum brakes. Brakes were sketchy with 33" tires. I went to 35s, & could not Safely stop! Now a double diaphragm booster probably would have stopped it, but I opted for Vanco's Hydro boost/master clyinder, with mounting bracket. Just round it off to $1000, but it will smoke the tires on pavement, with very little effort.
As for the rust, it states it is a Fiberglass replacement body! No idea of the frame condition, but seems a fair price, for what is there.
