Edelbrock intake question

I picked up an Edelbrock performer intake with plans to pick up a larger 4 barrel in the 600-650 cfm variety to wake up the 350 in the tow pig.
I don't have a line on a carb right now, but the motor has a factory 4 barrel. Would it be worth it to go ahead and install the intake with the stock carb, or should I wait.
Any recommendations on a good carb?

What carb (stock) would be on it now?

Truck is an '82 3/4 ton Suburban.
350, 4 barrel

I would def think it would be better than stock. It should be lighter than the oem cast iron, and also dissipate heat better. That truck should have a q-jet, and in my opinion is a very good carb when tuned correctly. They can get pretty good mileage compared to other carbs.

quadrapukes suck fyi.....bad gas miliage....at least from my experience.......ive put a eddy on everything ive gotten ahold of and slap it on an go....great carbs them edelbrocks

It is all in how you tune them

like I said earlier my cousin can build a Q-jet with the best of them

He is a Chevy man, and builds them to go on muscle cars and a few street/drag cars

X2 on what Josh said... a properly tuned q-jet will give you better fuel efficiency during normally driving... it may not dump the fuel quite like a eldebrock or holley but when the secondarys kick it it works....

X3 Id much rather have a smooth running QJet than any gold plated edelbrock any day. I had my 1/2 chevy with 33s with a good running qjet getting 18 mpg on the hwy. Of course it was still geared 308 so it was turning very hard. But Qjets make sense for a mild engine.

Go with a TBI

Can you wait and save some more money and go with the TBI system?

I bought a system from TPI guy through the FSJ BBS. At the time it was 1000.00 bucks. It installed in an afternoon. The tuning was spot on. Nowadays the system is even better. It was the best mod I put onto that Jeep.

you could go tbi for under $400....if you wanna tinker.

A spread bore carb (IE Qjet) buy shear physics will always out MPG a square bore as long as you keep the secondaries shut.

Also a good Qjet tune and proper timing curve can make a lethal throttle crack.

All that said, Ive never had one worth a shat at angles, and the edelbrock qjet replacement leaves much to be desired. Ive got a virtually new one Id make some one a smokin deal on...if you got something to trade...

Not worried about angles, its for the tow rig.
