I have been reading some on pirate today and noticed several of the posts have a pic of someone giving the bird. To me flipping someone off is the same as saying FU! and is an insult. If you post of pic of your kid flipping off the camera and post it you are insulting everyone that sees it and certainally teaching your kid bad manners at the least.

This has puzzled be for quite some time. Why do they do this and how is it cool? Maybe I'm just too old or take things too serious...

My question has always been who made the middle finger synonymous with FU??? If someone is really that angry at me, I wanna see them make an effort...like giving me the middle toe or something. IMO, foul language and gestures are purely for the folks that aren't intelligent enough to put a true insult together, or are too stupid to relay what they're actually thinking...so they don't bother me. I'm no prude and I will let a blue word fly from time to time especially when bs'ing with my buddies, but the folks that swear or gesture just for the sake of doing it are pretty annoying.

I shoot my friends the bird all the time and vice-versa. I would never allow my children to see it nor would I allow them to do so in a picture. They are onnly 3 and 5 after all. :flipoff2: <--- hahaha

The middle finger originated in Ancient Rome, where the gesture was used as a symbol of anal intercourse in a manner meant to degrade, intimidate and threaten the individual receiving the gesture.[1] It also represented the phallus, with the fingers next to the middle finger representing testicles.[2] The gesture was referred to in Latin in Ancient Roman writings as digitus impudicus, meaning the "shameless, indecent or offensive finger".[2]

The History of the Middle Finger

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'

IT IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE SALUTE TO THE FRENCH TODAY!

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing.

I've always thought it was pretty stupid when people would show a pic of an axle or some part they are pulling off their rig with the finger salute towards the part.

The middle finger originated in Classical antiquity, where the gesture was used as a symbol of anal intercourse in a manner meant to degrade, intimidate and threaten the individual receiving the gesture.[1] It also represented the phallus, with the fingers next to the middle finger representing testicles.[2] In the first-century Mediterranean world, extending the finger was one of many methods used to divert the ever-present threat of the evil eye.

I think I get it now. I just didn't realize so many people out there were gay. lol

Ira Robbins, a law professor, believes the finger is no longer an obscene gesture.[2] Psychologist David Walsh, founder of the National Institute on Media and the Family, sees the growing acceptance of the middle finger as a sign of the growth of a "culture of disrespect".

this post is beyond retarded and I hang around Ford guys so I know retarded.

Anyway, notice the double bird and then notice the smiley face in between as in... someone is being sarcastic and/or joking. I flip my friends off all the time and laugh. now if someone on pirate gives you the red bird aka the single bird, then that means FU. plus the smiley looks angry. I really don't see how you couldn't figure this out.

lastly, I can agree on one thing. I think kids who flip the bird are trashy and/or have been taught trashy ways. when they're babies it's funny because that's just a growth period they go through with their muscle development that causes that.
