educate me on water softeners.

Thanks for the input guys, I am searching for an independant lab now.

I think I have iron bacteria not sulfer. I dumped about a half gallon of bleach down the well a few days ago & the smell is nearly gone. Gonna get the test & go from there.

I'll update when I get some results

Jeff we have horrible water as well and I live 7 miles from the nearest city water, so I feel ya.

I looked into a softner but the neighbor had one and said it didnt work for him, etc. What we have done (and this works for us, YMMV) And it was at the recommendation from a water softener sales man. We dump like 5-10 gallons of Clorox into our well 1x/year. Let it sit for 12 hours or so, and then run every tap in the house for 2 hours.

We then installed those filter adapters in the sink for drinking water,

Check your water heater temp, too. If you have a bacteria problem, a ~125F water heater makes for a prime breeding ground. This applies 100x if the hot side is the only one that smells. Turn it up to 140F when you do the chlorox flush and leave it there.

I'll do that,

So my water pressure has gotten low. I go to change the filter after 2 weeks & blam! the fawkin PVC pipe breaks. The sumb$tch who installed them never fastened the pipes I was hoping I couold get the bowl off. I am to big to be under a fawkin house farting around with that chit.

Got my pressure back and fastened the in & out plumbing rigid.

Fawk my back hurts. I'm gonna drink some bacon flavored whiskey!

We've got one of these systems for the house and I highly recommend one...

If we move, it will come with us. I won't ever be without it. Before, our water literally stank, tasted "odd" and was full of sediment. Simply put, what we have now out of our faucets is more pure than anything you can get in a bottle. People that come to the house for the first time always make amazed comments about the water when they have a glass straight from the tap. You can even see it in the ice cubes. Before, they were cloudy, now they are clear. We don't even wipe down our glass shower surfaces because they dry clean. Same deal when I wash the cars, no need to dry because it will dry spotless. Even your skin feels better after showers. There's no residue on your body. I used to need to use lotion for dry skin, but haven't used any in the 2 years since we put the system in. It's amazing what a true quality filtration system can do all around. Not cheap by any means, but you get what you pay for and I'm happy I have one.

john,
whats the price range on that installed?

sounds interesting

It depends on the actual problems with your water as to what system you'd really need. It's free to have one of their reps come to your place, test your water, literally show you on the spot what is in your water currently, and they have a mini-filtration system so you can experience what it does for your water.

Interesting, I'm gonna look into that

I've had a rainsoft system now for over 10 years. We got it when we moved into the new house. In the short time we used it unfiltered we messed up some glass shower doors and some fixtures and one coffee pot.
Once in a while the salt will be a problem, like when my wife doesn't let the water run long enough, after the system has run overnight, when making coffee in the morning. Nothing like taking a sip of coffee and it tasting like you put salt instead of sugar in it. That only happens a few times though. For the most part it was well worth the $2500. I have the old mechanical head which is now obsolete and has to have parts fabricated. If it breaks again I will have to go with the electronic head.
My system dumps into my septic. I have a spot over my lines that where it will boil up if we use the washing machine too much. The deer love this spot and will eat all the grass down to the dirt in this spot. Must be a combo of all the minerals and salt. I would love to run a hose/pipe out back to the woods and let them have at it.
