Yeah, I know its probly been asked before. So here goes anyway. What kind of egt's should I expect to see on my 03 f250 7.3 once I get my guage in while idling, highway, towing, or intown. Also at what temp should I shut her down? What is considered to high and why?

in most cases, any temp OVER 1250* is considered flirting with disaster,

especially sustained temps at or above. momentary isn't usually harmful but repeated occurances can also have an effect.

What you are concerned with is over heating of the pistons tops, valves and turbine blades causing them to melt, crack or otherwise frag. bad juju when you are pulling or riding it hard.

most cases anything below 1150* is safe and should pose no issues.

Ok thanks for the info. I have another question though, should I instal the thermocoupler on exhaust into turbo or exhaust out of turbo?

Before the turbo, those are your highest temps just out of the combustion chamber just before the turbo.

I 'believe' the pass side exhaust manifold is the best/easiest place on the Fords

Cant speak for a Ford, but my dodge is normally between 400-800* with every day driving and not much more than that towing unless I really get on it or get in a good incline. I barely got to 1200* pulling the trooper up black mountain. I shut my truck off between 200 and 300*.

the drivers side up-pipe is more easily accessible. From the drivers side, underneath the truck, youll see the up-pipe connection to the manifold. Drill and either tap or use just drill and use the thermocouple about two inches upward on the manifold itself (not the uppipe). The tap in bung is 1/4 x 18 tpi thread, or just drill a 1/4 hole and use the thermocoupler. Coat the drill bit in grease to catch the metal shavings so they dont get into the turbo - or not, cause that will give you an excuse for me to upgrade your turbo :smokin:

give me a hollar if you run into probs.
