How many of you guys run electric fans on your jeeps? The reason that I am asking is because I am planning on putting one on my YJ in place of the driven fan so that I can have heat, as is the engine never goes over about 110 F even in the middle of summer. I have put a piece of stainless in between the radiator and a/c radiator so that it will allow the thermostat to actually function. But I'm just trying to see from others their suggestions. I will of course run an switch to turn the fan on at a certain temp.

an electric fan is not cheap to do RIGHT and if you half-ass the install it will inevitably give you nightmare problems down the road.....

your problem of not getting to operating temp is not b/c your clutch fan is a bad design, it's b/c you have a problem with your cooling system. sounds typical of a thermostat that's stuck open or otherwise faulty.....

try installing a new thermostat and see what happens..... and verify your gauge reads accurate... yj gauges rarely do....

Sure

Can be done cheaply and right. Go get a fan from a Taurus with the 3.8. Plenty of fan. Mounting you'll have to figure on your own, not hard.

Controlling it, Use a fan switch to turn on a relay. Again, junkyard. The're are a couple that'll, can't remember which ones though.

The thermostat was my first guess and I already replaced it, along with a full flush. I know that the thermostat is working now since it actually gets up to temp now and holds it(~180f). I guess I'll try the taurus or similar fan and come summer see what happens, if it doesn't work I can always hook up the driven fan again.

you can buy a thermostat switch for fans at just about any auto parts store usually in the electric fan section. you can get the cheap switch for about 20 bucks slide the thermostat into the radiator hose, hook power through the swithc to the fan and adjust accordingly works great i never have problems with mine

What engine do you have ? How do you have the heater lines hooked up ?

Your heater line should draw off your engine (thus drawing 180d coolant) then dump back to the rad. or some place else.

Is your heater core plugged ? That will prevent flow/heat.

My chevy draws off the intake near the back of the head, and dumps to a port on the radiator.

heater

i have the 4.0, my heater is hooked up normal, nothing strange. I know that I have heat when I put the piece of SS in front of the radiator and when I remove it, it drops back down and runs ~110 all year long.

I have a 2.5l and run an elec fan for obvs reasons. But honestly I get very little heat out of my jeep. It takes about 15-20min for the jeep to get semi warm inside and I sport a hardtop and glass windows

i go with there got to be something causeing it to flow wrong try unhooking you heater core and blowing air though it se if that helps

IMO, would find/fix the actual issue with your cooling system before changing things around and adding complication.

Also, I seriously doubt that the fan is the root cause of your problem.

see if you actually even have a thermostat or its not stuck open, for a 4 liter to run at 110* in the middle of summer is a rarity.

heat

i finally put a thermometer in the radiator when I got home, it's actually doing what it's supposed to, running about 160, i took the heater hoses off and sprayed water through them. I noticed that the water coming out was not coming out with the pressure that it was going in, just running out actually. Would a heater core hinder the flow that much normally or do you guys think that they're a blockage in there? I'm not really sure which is the return hose, but the hose that hooks to the metal pipe that kinda runs up and under the upper radiator hose doesn't get nearly as hot as the hose that is directly hooked to the thermostat housing, if that makes any sense. I know that there is a thermostat in there, i just replaced it a few months ago. I don't mind replacing the heater core if i need to, I just rather not replace a part that has nothing wrong with it.

I've got a taurus fan if anyone is interested. I'm not 100% sure that it came from the 3.8L but it is the same size and in good shape. $25
