I'm trying to get my Cushman back in shape and its got a points style ignition system. It's an OMC twin cylinder 18hp. Similar to onans but not the same.

It has a small ~distributor with 2 sets of points each firing a separate coil, but no rotor or cap etc.. its a very basic setup, with no advancing mechanisms etc.

My plan is to use an standard 4 pin GM HEI module to fire both plugs at one time in a waste spark configuration.

1) Im looking for a small simple way to trigger the module. I'd like to find one that doesnt encircle the distributor houseing or require centering both components.

*** I've seen pics of a ford magnetic pickup that just sits on one side/corner and uses the bumps/notches on a metal plate to trigger it. But I don't know what it would have came on..

GM uses a large pickup coil and large start type wheel that both need fairly precise centering alignment. So I'd like to avoid that if i can.. I guess worst case I could get an alignment piece machined to center it up..

2) What vehicles came with 2 plug coil packs. I don't want a 4/6/8 all in one pack, but just 2 in one package..

The main reason for firing both plugs is to eliminate the possibility for timing misalignment on either plug vs making a simple 180 trigger mechanism, vs a dual pickup configuration.

though i guess if there was a nice generic (cheep) pickups that were easily accessible it wouldn't be a huge deal to time each plug separately. Ill snap some pics tonight, I may be able to mount them to trigger off the flywheel, or mount something to the flywheel, providing I have sufficient pickup adjustment.

Any ideas... thoughts opinions.. ? (ill snap some pics tonight)

chevy cavaliers and luminas and others with the 2.8 and 3.1 had 3 two plug coils mounted on top of an ignition module

If it is an OMC I would check with someone that works on boats. Could be a dead end. but I think you may find an easy fix. Just a thought
