Electronics idiot needs help with TV

The Apple/Chrome/Prime devices will all access multiple services, but they're biased toward their own product line.

That's my reason for recommending a Chromebox, there are no product lines. It's not a limited-content streaming stick or app-tethered box. It's far, far, far more flexible than anything that Roku makes, and barely more expensive than a Roku 3. It's a full featured, low power laptop. The only bad thing I can say about the Chromebox is that it doesn't run Windows, and can't run most Windows software because of that.

But, if the primary user is going to be a kid, it's probably best to get something really simple and forget about the practical limitations. So maybe save money and get a Roku, which is the best of the rest.

No, I'm not biased.... I just don't like to buy things with built-in content limitations.

The chromebox isn't a streaming device, it's a PC - and not a very good one at that. All depends on what features you need. If you want to browse the web on your tv, the chrome box is one way to do that. But if you want a streaming device that is intuitive and can be run by a novice with a remote control, get a roku.
