I have reciently aquired a 1975 CJ5 with a AMC 304 V8. I have heard of some issues with the internal oil lubrication. Would one of you nice folks confirm this & point me in the right direction to update this.

Thanks, Jeff B.

anybody heard of this???

there are some issues with the AMC V-8's having oiling problems

low oil pressure

there is an article on this web site somewhere that talks about sanding the mid gears down to increase oil pressure in AMC v-8's

www.bulltear.com

I guess that is the question you had right?

AFAIK, all AMC V8s suffer from the same aliments...

- Low oil flow in the rear mains (IMO, "Froadin.com" has the best AMC engine around)

- chronic low oil pressure attributed to either worn bearings and usually a badly worn timing chain cover (houses the oil pump). I've lapped the oil pump cover (covers the ends of the gears) on a sheet of glass with fine emery to remove scratches and get them back flat from some monkey torquing the #3!! out of the bolts. If you search, you can also find thinner gaskets for the pump cover to reduce to gears abilty to simply spin it the oil instead of pumping it. A couple of flatwashers under the bypass spring will bump you a few #'s, but too much might(will) explode the filter.

Again, all this is covered at Froadin.com

THANKS guys this is what I was looking for:rolleyes:

Does anyone have a link for a gm hei conversion on the AMC 304?

Gear slides off bottom, and IIRC you have to clearance the top collar to get it to slide in.

Its been about 5 years since I did this.

wish I knew this before had a 74 cj5 304 and it locked up on me from this same problem. Cam locked up and everything went to crap

Can you be a little more specific on the clearance of the top collar? Will this need to be machined?

Jeff I wish I could remember beetter.
Too many ::beer::s I suppose.

But I think you *should* machine it, seems like I used a dremel...

I will check check with both of these guys

thanks

I hadn't ever done it, but I do belive trailjeepman on this board has, give Nathan a shout
I actually have not done this yet. I am still thinking about it but my stock dizzy is working fine for now. Its a good upgrade though. I did have one on my 258 though. It was great!
