Engine or tranny issue when shifting from D to R

I am wondering what could be the cause if a stalling problem I have every now and then in my 94 Grand Cherokee. Sometimes when you shift from reverse to drive, the RPMs drop and the jeep will sometimes stall. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen. What could be causing this?

Clay, mine does that as well. Not sure what is really causing the problem. But I have started shifting a little slower. From R to D I let it sit in N for just a split second longer and it does fine.

Jeremy, what motor/trans combo do you have?

maybe pump going bad? Maybe solenoids in the trans? I'm no transmission guy but I'd think something that controls the flow of fluid would be my first guess...

how many miles? how often do you service the transmission? Has it been serviced recently?

Gotcha, just windering if it is a engine/trans combo issue, but doesn't sound like it because i have the 5.2/46RH combo.

There is 137k on the odometer, and I am assuming it is the original transmission. I just bought the jeep, so I am not sure when the last time the trans fluid was changed, I haven't changed it yet. Which brings up another question, if the PO hasn't serviced the trans like he should have, I am very apprehensive of changing the fluid because I could dislodge some gunk that may be 'band aiding' my trans right now. What is everyone's thoughts?

Now in the big red zj I ran a couple times. That had the V8 again not sure of trans. But I did notice with it everytime I took it out. That she would die on me changing gears until she got real nice and warm. The first 5-10 minutes of riding she would die out on my changing from P-D and R-D. But then after that it was fine. Would shift smoothly.

How does it run, rough? Smooth? I'd pull the plugs and replace/clean and clean the tb on it along with a fluid and filter change for the tranny.

its a chrysler transmission of course its on its way out.
pump or tc sound like likely culprits to me

does it only do it from drive to rev? does it happen rev to drive?
it could be a cross leak in the pump.
my first thought would be a weak cps. do you have a way to test the cps for wave signal? if it has less than 5volt signal or a "fuzzy" square wave it is a weak cps.

Lee, it happens from rev to drive as well. I don't have a way to test the CPS, but I hear those are common problems with these jeeps, so it may be a good idea to go ahead and change it.

I also plan to change the plugs and wires this week, so we will see if that helps.
