Pro's con's, best all around? Looking for new or used but really want a good product. I have used a few that were sketchy at best and took enormous effort to roll a engine over. Looking for use on mostly small block V 8 configurations. Thought about building my own. Anybody got any good links to such builds??

I don't have one myself. For the 2-3 times a year I do an engine swap or install, my trusty ol Big Red brand stand works fine.
I did use them at the dealership for years though.

Build your own and put a used atv winch on the end. Push a button and it rotates one way, and then can rotate the other. Just need to hook up the electric part, or put a battery on bottom of stand lol

I really have nothing much to add lol

I don't really think it will be used like a busy engine shop. I just don't want investments on sketchy junk. And I hate spending money on half assed equipment or parts. But I gotta justify how deep I reach into the piggy bank.I haven't used what I felt was a decent one yet. They were all borrowed cheaply built stands. All of them took enough leverage to turn you might as well have flipped the entire mess, stand and all.

I've never had trouble with the one I got from northern tool. It is like the one from jegs but without the hand crank. But I'm usually putting 22r engines on it.

On the cheaper stands, one of the most over looked things is to GREASE the pivot before you load the stand EVERY time, things work SO much better when that happens. I've watched so many fight the stand because they never bothered to grease the pivot.

CENTERING the load helps a lot too, slapping engine up there and hoping for the best doesn't usually end well.

Me thinks I will spring for the Jegs unit. Spend less time fabbing and more time spinning bolts. Its is high time my junk was runnin again. I think it will fir the bill.

I've had good luck just adding bracing and gusseting to cheap ones. definitely greasing the rotating part helps a bunch.

I've rebuilt big blocks with no issues on my cheap stands. but as said, 4 wheels is a must. The 3 wheel version was just a stupid idea.

I've seen some REALLY cool home made stands. And some modified stands. And it's always nice to have jigs already set up for the engine you are working on if you know it will be repetitive.

I bought a 3 leg stand for 6o bucks on amazon and modifyed the one leg into 2 in less then 25 mins. 2 holes drilled for casters and four 2 inch welds and was done.
That crank on jegs looks nice but 200 seems a lil redic

One thing that I will add on to my next stand is a large drip pan on the legs. It sucks when you have to clean up a mess under the stand, then clean up the wheel tracks from at least 1 wheel having to roll thru the mess.
