I need some information about engine swaps. Can you swap an older engine into a newer car and still pass state inspection? I can't remember when OBDI became OBDII, was it 95 and 96? Will a newer engine swap into an older vehicle if you also swap the computer? Will that pass state inspection?

OBD2 started in '96. Technically speaking swapping and older engine into a newer car won't pass but swapping a newer engine into an older car will. However, If we're talking Chevy 350s and you swap one that's within a couple of years and everything off the newer engine is on the older one, no one but you would know. My '85 4runner has an '84 motor in it but it looks like it belongs there. (That and I'm an inspector)

Your '85 Toyota only has to pass a safety inspection, where a later model has to pass emission and safety inspection.

If the vehicle is OBDI and only needs a safety inspection an older engine MAY pass as long as it visually looks like the original should.

Generally 95 is OBDI 96 is OBDII

Generally you can make this option work, especially if it's the same type engine, ie, V8 to V8 and not 4 banger to V8. Even if you swap a newer engine in, the vehicle SHOULD have the equipment of the older engine. ie, when I went to get the CJ7 with the 97 5.2 motor looked at, the inspector had a book that said it SHOULD have certain, specific emissions equipment that was not even available on the new engine. In order to pass it he would have to "see" that equipment on the new motor.

It really seems to depend on the inspector, the shop's relationship with the state people that keep an eye on them and if they have been burned by the state for improper work. Just my experience.

While this is true, it still has to have the original emissions equipment that came from Toyota on the truck.

Ok let'stalk apples to apples.
His is a 96 Dodge V-10
Not sure of if it's a 3/4 or one tone.
I know my RV which is considered a one ton, has a V-10, but only has to have a saefty inspection.

My dodge is a 2500, but is heavy enough to only warrant a safety inspeciton.

If the GVWR is over 8500 on your door/jam sticker and you know a shop. I see no problem. The RV is registered as an RV so gets a safety only.
