Engine swaps, emissions, and me

So I've found a good donor vehicle (1984 mercedes 300td) for a diesel swap into the XJ, wondering what the repercussions would be when I go to get it inspected?

Don't have an emissions check in my county but what will I need to do to have it legal for the road?

correct me if im wrong, but i thought the engine going in had to be newer or the same year as your car in NC? but then again it is diesel so i dont know if that matters. i would like to know too now :)

I thought the same thing, and it was supposed to have all the emissions controls that the newer engine had from the factory...

Should I apply for a custom title? ANyone know what happens changing fuel type, etc?

On a side note, anyone got any advice as far as custom adapter for the aw4 or mercedes tranny to a divorced case like a 205?

I looked into this a while back when I had my Benz Diesel

I don't think it would have been a worth while swap MB parts are really $$ and hard to get
No real wheel spinin' power, Anything can be made but again I didn't think it was worth the effort
My .02 but good luck

Yeah, wouldn't be doing it for the sake of power... The benz 300 is considerably heavier than the XJ, so I think the 3.0 turbodiesel would be do well enough turning the tars.

Really the benz is cheap enough that if I drive it for around 8000 miles it'll have paid for itself. Gonna drive it for the next year and work the swap out, I've seen this engine/tranny dropped into an MJ but it was 2wd.

Seems like oil pan to diff clearance is the main issue with this swap into a 4wd, I already have enough lift for it to clear but I don't want it to just barely clear, i'd like to keep some flex...

But since the 300 is in decent running shape, the MB parts issue isn't much of a concern. I'll either be keeping the old MB on the road or trying to put its power train in the jeep.
