It didn't dawn on me until a conversation with my kids as to how many "Causes" we dedicate months on the calendar for. My son was telling me that their school was "celebrating" October as "Bully month" (he's in Kindergarten), and my daughter was arguing with him, "No it's not, it's Breast Cancer Awareness month" (she's 7) and my other daughter chime in that it's "Pregnancy and Baby Loss month". Come to find out, they were ALL correct.
So even taking out the number of "awareness DAYS" and "awareness WEEKS", here is the number of "awareness MONTHS" I have been able to find.

American Diabetes Month
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Stomach Cancer Awareness Month
Bone Marrow Awareness Month
December:

MADD Month
Now, all of these seem to be very worthy causes, but do we really need to devote entire months to their awareness? Especially like in October where there are SO many of them that it loses it's effectiveness. And some of the months make sense as to their cause (placing Sexual Assault Awareness Month near prom season and having UV Safety Month in the middle of summer) , but others would seem to be more effective if placed in a more appropriate month. (i.e. placing Food& Safety month in November to coincide with Thanksgiving or putting National Nutrition Awareness Month in October to coincide with Halloween or Alcohol Awareness Month in March for St. Patricks Day.)
Ironically, at school, my son was told he needed to wear orange in October to build Bullying Awareness. He came home and said that we needed to go out and buy him some orange clothes so he would fit in with the rest of the kids wearing orange. Sounds sorta like he's being bullied into wearing orange! LOL
I guess I'm just not much into causes. Several of these apply to me and my family, but I just don't feel strongly enough about any of them to do anything different to raise awareness of them to anyone.
