A friend of mine has a 97 Explorer 2wd. It looks like the rear seal is leaking.......from what I have been told. Do you have to take the tranny out to replace the seal. I havent even looked at this thing yet but I told them I would try to help with the repair if I could. So any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I notice the same on alot of Fords

most of the time they leak at the pinion seal

drop the driveshaft where it meets at the tranny, take the yoke off and replace the seal

I have seen them leak, replace the seal and after 20,000 miles they start leaking again

If that is where it is leaking, my buddy has replaced the seal on his F-250 3 times, and it always ends up leaking again

Yes Nathan you can replace it while it's n the truck. Call me if you have any questions.

Josh if your friends keeps leaking there is a couple reasons why it does.
1. the slip yoke that slides in it has wore spots or burrs that chew up the seal
2. not being put in properly
3. the shaft the yoke slides onto has play in it and is allowing it to move creating wear on the seal.

Yeah it is a 94 model, high mileage, and has some play and just wears

he likes the quick fix every 6 months

Yo,
Likely the tailshaft bushing is egg shaped from wear and thus allowing the input shaft to beat the seal out of shape creating uneven wear. At some point you should consider pulling the trans tailshaft and have a new bushing installed. That should mitigate the number of seal changes in the future and stop the leak.
