My wife’s son is coming in on the 2nd of sept at 6:45 pm. We are thinking to find some good grub after his flight and before we make the trek back to Aberdeen. Thinking of eating there and not waiting in case the airline does what they’re best at and we get delayed getting out of the airport. Nothing specific menu wise but also not looking for a fancy sit down to take a lot of time (if that makes sense). TIA

Brier creek is right next to the airport and has a bunch of options. Most of them are chains though but there is a good sushi place and an Irish pub that are both good there. Any specific types of food you want? There are tons of options in the area

Nothing specific as far as menu but we do like one off places as opposed to some Applebees type place. Trying to introduce the young man to NC and not something he can get anywhere in the states (although this is the furthest he’s been from home in his life).

Carolina Ale House (at Brier Creek) is at least a local chain. Decent food, sports bar atmosphere. There another one in Cary near 40/440/Rt 1, that might be more 'on the way' back to Aberdeen. Not far from there is the Shiny Diner, used to be called Gypsy's, which is good and odd for the area (Cary has always hated it because, well, Cary).

Then it needs to be a real NC BBQ place. End of discussion.
Pulled pork, hush puppies, BBQ slaw.

I didn't appreciate how different (and so much better) NC is in this respect until I moved away.

And if I may be a bit selfish I wouldn’t say no to this frame of thought!! 2 birds with one BBQ and all that….

There are tons of good bbq in the triangle.

If you want a bit nicer than the small places of a sit down you can always do the pit. We like long leaf swine in downtown. Then there are tons of other ones also.
If there are names of places please expound. I’ll gladly take any recommendations! But will put long leaf on the list to review!!

Couple favorites that aren’t mentioned much in the area.

Hibernian Irish Pub - cool old school vibe and good food.

Towne Hall burger and beer - I’m a fat man who likes burgers. I haven’t had a better burger. I40 exit 274..probably 10 minutes from airport.

The Hibernian on Falls of Neuse has been better than the Glenwood location since covid.

I like the Angus Barn every so often, but the date in the OP's question is also a Saturday night, so I wouldn't even.

Not too far out of the way, but PICNIC in Durham is a must for comfort food & BBQ.

Beyond that, if you've never tried it: Alpaca
It's a local family owned Peruvian chicken place, and they have several locations in the triangle. Best chicken I've had in my life.

I'm going to put this on my list....been looking for a good place to grab fish & chips or shepherd's pie!

While Angus Barn is a fancy Fru Fru over rated restaurant, if you go in and ask to sit in the meat locker, you can get a reasonably priced menu that is decent. The meat locker is anything but fancy and has decent patio seating.
