looking at an excursion for a tow rig. this one is the v10 tow package. yadda yadda. what im wondering is the gas mileage and the brakes for stopping it. i know id need air bags on it pulling a trailer with my jeep on it. the ones i have seen towing stuff were all saggin in the back. what rear axle is on them?

i dont need to be first to the destination when towing. i just need to make it there. im thinking i would probably regret making it a daily driver and love it for towing

Noah's got 1...

A bud has the same drivetrain in an F250 (w/ ALL Banks options) that avgs. 8mpg empty downhill in a tailwind and 4-6mpg towing...

I promise you he can smoke a diesel in the towing performance dept... just can't pass a gas station! :shaking:

I like mine and tows fine. I bit more top heavy than a F250 and the pre-02s do not have a rear sway bar but Hellwig makes a 34mm that fits. The rear you can upgrade the springs from a F350 or bag it. The tounge weight of the trailer and where you posistion the rig on the trailer makes all the difference. But it tows just fine and sleeps great too.

I've got an F-250 with a V-10. At the time I bought mine, gas was like $1.35 a gallon and I thought, I can buy a hell of a lot of gas for the $5,000 the diesel option cost. Big mistake.

I get about 8 mpg towing and 10 mpg during regular driving. The best I have ever gotten was around 12 mpg on the highway @ 60 mph.

My good buddy has a diesel excursion to tow their race car trailer, and as far as good tow rig I can tell you it tows very well and is very nice to have the extra space. I don't know their MPG's though.

ok so im lookin for diesels and im not havin any luck. i only get at 14-15 in my current vehicle so im used to stoppin and filling it up

we usually tow the two-car with an excursion(6.0 diesel), with bags/WD hitch, it does just fine.., and yes it sleeps two pretty comfortably.

Yeah I think when my expedition finally gives up the ghost I will upgrade to a diesel excersion... They seem to be the best of both worlds.

but i have to say my stock expedition with factory air bags, tows awesome.. getting about 10-12 per gallon @ highway speeds

Took me 4 months to find a 7.3 w/ 80K miles. Found it in Monroe for $20K 1 year ago. They are out there but you gotta be patient. I bet with the jump in diesel prices there will be some available. www.autotrader.com

If you are interested in sleeping in the back, then it becomes a GREAT tow vehicle. Otherwise it is just as good as any other 3/4 ton with gas engine.

Pros: Gas engine is 4-6k cheaper than diesel, around town I think Noah gets 10-12ish and 12ish and change on the hwy.

With my old Excursion 7.3L, I got 15.5 consistently around town and 17.5 was my best ever hwy doing most 75mph from NC to KY (so a good amount of hills between here and there)

Towing my Jeep I got 12.x, worse mileage was 8-9 mpg towing the camper with the tranny OUT of overdrive. FOund out that wasn't really needed and got 11.x towing camper from then on.

If you have family OR want to sleep in the back, the Ex beats out a crew cab or ex cab...plus you can STILL put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back, been there DONE that.

sweet excursion. outta my price range though. i think im gonna get this one im lookin at. the drivetrain seems to be in great shape, the interior not so much. kids and a dog had a hold of it. probably as good as i can get. somebody put chrome door handles on it and now the electric door lock doesnt work. what the hell

actuators. writeup on the dieselstop.com on how to fix.

I got one. I have had a problem with rotors warping for some reason. Of course the trailer I pull doesn't have trailer brakes. I love mine. It is the 7.3 too. I put the hypertech chip in it and it screams compared to stock. I get 16-17 mpg.

Well my $.02...
Towing a fullsize with a V-10 will suck the gas- 8-9mpg on my '00 CC F250 4x4. I get 12-13mpg unloaded (highway or around town) but I hit just over 14mpg when I last drove to Boston (800miles). Of course I have 35" tires, 4" lift and 4.88 gears.

The front rotors are junk on these trucks. I got a deal on some powerslot rotors and haven't had a problem since. I also went to ceramic pads and they seemed to make a difference.

The auto door locks on mine work 50% of the time, but that is an easy fix as someone already pointed out.

I wanted an Ex when I was looking, but just couldn't find one for the right money. That one linked earlier in this post is sweet... too bad I'm not in the market now.

4xfever- just buy a damn tow rig and move on!

Replace all of them at one time they run 25-30 dollars a piece and a little blood to

I have a 2002 with the V10. I get 11-13 MPG around town. Up to 14 over the road. Towing I get 6-9 depending on the hills...I get 6 up to Callalantee and 9 home...I can take 4 people and all our camping equipment plus tow the jeep. When family comes to visit its great to load everyone in one truck and run around town. I love the X, like others I only wish I had the diesel. I had to upgrade the front brake rotors to more heavy duty ones too. I have brakes on both axles of my trailer but my front brake rotors were warping every six months or so.
