Ive got an 1983 Chevy K10 (the one in my sig.). I went to the exhaust shop yesterday and he told me that I had to have catalytic converters. What year did this start being a requirement? Do ya'll run them on your trail rig?

They became mandatory on cars and light trucks after 1975. Anything before that year that were already equipped from the factory must keep them. Heavier GVWR 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks were phased in later, my 1978 K30 did not come with them from the factory.

Your 83 did come with them, and should have them on to pass inspection. That said, rarely does a inspection shop even question you on an older truck like that. Unless they have been busted for not checking and are scared to have it happen again.

Not really worried about that as its mostly gonna be on the trails. The most road time it may see is between trails

In Uwharrie, they will ticket you quick-like for driving an unliscenced vehicle on the roads between trails. They're state roads, and are governed under the same laws as I-40. As cheap as cats are these days, it couldn't hurt to have the shop throw them on while it's on the lift. And they don't hurt performance like you think they do.

Good to know but as of right now it wont even pass inspection

Well throw some hi flow cats under there, or one large one if you have a Y, and get it inspected if that's all you need.

I've got a 79 Yota pickup that has no cat. PO had to get a letter from the Toyota about it. They don't have cats until 80. I've had to bust that letter out multiple times for inspections or exhaust work. Not sure about Cheby

Weird, I had a 77 Yota 2wd with the 20r and it definitely had a catalytic converter (I know this because I hacked it and the muffler off  and replaced with a straight through tractor muffler, oh about 10 years ago because it was rusted and just an old farm truck). There may have been some weird conditions set out for import vehicles at the time as it did take a few years to phase in. Some cars had them before 75, but 75 was the year it was mandated on all cars and light trucks in the US, this was also the year lead gas was phasing out as lead gas would kill the converters. My 78 K30 did not come with converters as the heavier trucks were exempt for a few years, much like 3/4 and 1 ton trucks only have safety inspections and no emissions inspections today.
