I used my glass lined thermos this past weekend. It got muddy, and was left in the sink soaking. I didn't touch it until yesterday. it had gotten water inside, so I took it apart(designed this way for cleaning) I was holding it, reaching for a brush to go down into it, and it exploded in my hand. I did not hit it, was just holding it. I send glass 10' in both directions. embedded one small piece in one of my fingers. Could have been bad, since I was doing dishes and didn't have on safety glasses.
So my question is, Why did it explode? Any ideas?

The government is onto you. They knew that if you cleaned the thermos, it would expose the hidden message.

Hey I like these answers better than an actual explanation! LOL
And John, if it had been in my right hand, I would have thought that, after neck surgery, I have little feeling in my right hand, and have broke glasses becauseof holding them too tight.

you don't wear safety glasses while doing dishes!?
On a serious note, good thing you weren't hurt. I guess the top was left on, allowing pressure to build? What was in the thermos? Was it soaking in hot water? Somethign had to cause a pressure buildup either in the drink compartment or between the drink container/liner and the thermos body. Food (soup?)starting to rot and ferment could certainly build pressure. The act of you picking it up must have sloshed the contents just enough to generate force, when added with internal pressure, to burst the container.

Wait, so was the lid on?
I know when I put dish soap and a little water in my Nalgene bottles, put the lid on, and shake them, they build up a substantial amount of pressure. Enough to spew out all over the counter when you open them...

If it wasn't pressure, it may have been tempered glass?
We use that a bunch at work...one little scratch and it'll explode.
If you scratch/dent/puncture deep enough to get through the tempered part, the internal glass is under pressure.

Chip, with great power comes great responsability. You should know when doing dishes & to wear safty glases & heavy leather gloves. This time you were lucky.

It was soaking, with no lid on it, lid was also soaking, in cold water. I had just taken the bottom off, just like I had many times before. This allows the liner to slide out of the outside casing. just the liner, no lid, was in my hand when it exploded.

The temperature changes over time actually strain and stress the glass, and any small chip, crack, bump, etc can cause it to shatter. Google exploding pyrex for more info about it.

Was the stopper in it? Altitude difference from weekend to home?

No stopper wasn't in it.
I would get a metal one but last three I bought, were pretty sorry. I had a stanly that was awesome until I put bleach in it, then it was terrible. bought a brand new one, and it wouldn't keep coffee hot for only a few hours.

The only thing this makes me think of is the John Boy & Billy story of Juble and his thermos.

It keeps hot stuff, hot and cold stuff, cold.

Whatcha got in there?!

Two cups of coffee and a glass of sweet tea! :D

Choosing a real good quality thermos is a big deal. The platform really helped me once because good analyses are what we need when we about to buy something new. Really good analyses and guides. Have a look if you have the same choosing problem. It is very convenient and saving time when you can choose and buy a thing on the same resource.
This is an excellent idea about how to do the research shows that the Internet contains information regarding the analysis of a circus accidents.

Spammer. There was a link in the post.

That's the new tactic.... rather than registering an account and posting a thread advertising D!$C0UNT C1@L!$ !!1!!!!!1 and getting their shit flagged automatically, they go and find some 4yo thread and reply to it, then embed a link in the reply.

If you see something that looks suspicious, please flag it for review. The moderators aren't necessarily going to see every post in every thread, and some of them don't know how the spam cleaner tools work. ;)
