I have found a rear axle out of a F-650 that I believe is a 70's truck. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of axle it would be. I haven't got to look at it yet. It is sitting in a pasture at my buddy's uncle's and it will be a free upgrade for my new jeep/buggy project. I will need to find one to match for the front. Are there any things to look for to determine exactly what it is? Can anyone help?

It is probably an old face loading Rockwell or Timken axle... more than likely it will be very large, and possibly a 2 speed rear... finding a front to match may prove difficult/expensive....

You'll probably need atleast 44s to get decent clearance out of it. Its going to be a dual rear wheel axle too. Probably gonna be way to big and costly to find parts for.

Dual

I was trying to figure away around the "dual" tire problem with a wiiiiide backspaced rim and a wide tire. If its too expensive to find parts for and of course one to match how can a guy on an extreme budget find a good "overly" strong axle for as cheap as this one at $150? I know most of the people on this wonderful forum are DO-IT-YOURSELFERS and lets say "frugal" to avoid hurting any feelings of the cheap-ass Presidential Solution (AKA JERRY RIG) Type. Give me some hints you smart guys with all that "RED NECK INGENUITY" I am begging here! Any of you who saw my Yellow F-250 know I just gave away a nice truck to get a house but I CANNOT give up the MUD!

There are alot of U-Pull-It yards where rear axles can be had cheap... Pull-a-part in Charlotte (for example) has rear axles for under $100... and d60s can be easily found there...

Thanks

Tools? Sorry not much of a junk-yard junkie. Small and large adjustable, socket set, Sledge, Breaker bar, small jack(should be one in a vehicles spare tire area right)? Anything else? I have a grinder anyway to get power to it or is that a lost cause? I would love to be able to just cut some U-bolts.....

portable sawzall + extra blades. Maybe you can run one offf an inverter. Not sure but I know you can run a blender and it pulls some amps

best campsite tool ever esp. for the ladies :) that thing was cool.

check with the local u-pull it yards. Some don't allow jacks and most don't allow tools that make sparks, etc. (torch and grinders).

If you already have rechargable tools, buy the one with the Volts and brand that you already own. Only expereience I've had was with the 18V Milwaukee and it was a piece of crap. It was purchased from Lowes and it was about 5 years ago (right when they first came out), they may be better now. I've had nothing but great experience with Milwaukee except this one tool, so it could have just been that particular tool.

I have a 24V Dewalt Drill so I guess I'll go with something like that. Do I need anything other than what I have listed? If some places don't allow jacks how the hell do you get an axle out? Block it up take the tires loose and beat them out from under the load? I am a little confused..... Why would they make it so hard? Insurance liability?

...i can understand cheap rear 60.....but cheap front 60????? never heard of such a thing, what kind of devilworship is this lol
