Just replaced a ceiling fan that has a pretty big ass DC motor.
Is it worth digging it apart to take to a scrapper? No idea what's even involved. It has a SS housing.

Probably not by itself. If you already have a pile started then yeah maybe.Elec motors around here bring .14/# and number 2 copper is $2,20/# if you take it apart.Check your local prices and see if its worth it to you.

I always save electric motors. Starters, alternators (i know not a motor but they bring the same price), fan motors, window motors. If it's an electric motor, I always save them cause they all bring the same money.
Back in the summer the price for em got up to .35/# and I cashed out.Wound up w about 1100# worth of electric motors/alt's/starters.

How much does it need to be broken down to the motor though? Right now what I have is the whole casing, basically downrod into a big metal shell that the blades attach to. This doesn't seem to be built liek your typical $80 Hunter fan.

It's worth about 2-3x as much as regular steel. So if you have 1, it's not really worth the effort.

The more you tear it down, the more they are likely to pay. The main goal is the copper windings. Yes, they will buy it complete, but for less money. If you can get the covers off & down to the basic motor, it will help. You can still give them the metal housing / cover, & anything metal. They'll give you a few cents for the metal. They buy electric cords too, just for the copper. Probably makes no difference if you cut the cord off, or leave it on. Cords are not worth stripping the insulation off of.

They call that #2 insulated around here. Its currently .35/#,This place isnt the closest to me but they pretty much set the price around here,

I picked up a list from a newish place near me, but gave it to my Scarp buddy today. Only thing I recall was Cans listed 50 cent #. I thought that seemed low.
They had gotten to .65/# back in the spring-early summer. At one time they had been as low as .25/#,so thats not bad.
