Fancy Gap vs Black Mountain

troopers in Va are not as bad as the hype. just keep it less than 6 over limit and all is good.

This.

I have been pulled for 6 over at the I77/I81 split. So that's definitely the magic number.

I have over 9 years driving and a million + otr miles. You dont take 40 unless it is absolutly short by a big margin or you just want to experince the gorge. And black mountian is no joke last time i took a semi down it was about 9 years ago with 6-8 inchs of snow and basically empty trailer.

I sure do enjoy passing people in cars going up old fort/black mountain while pulling a trailer. It's only a couple of miles anyway, the drive through Tn is what sucks either way.

77/81 HANDS DOWN from an old east TN guy that's been traveling that Knoxville to Greensboro run for 50 years :)
Ditto! It's only 12 - 14 miles difference. I77-I81 you have alternatives in case of a accident. I-40 you don't.

Another vote for 52/74/77/81. I went by way of 40 once and hated it. I make way better time especially up the hill at fancy gap. The hemi truck loves going up that hill at triple digit speeds when traffic allows.

:smokin: I just wish I would've kept a count over the last 6yrs or so how many 6.0 turds I've passed on that mountain with the hood up in the
E-lane. Cracks me up every time, and I KNOW I'm not the only one that has seen them.

If ya want another route, take hwy. 52 north from Winston-Salem to Wythville,Va. That's what EVERYBODY drove before the interstate was built. Made many trips driving a Diamond T to get to California this way because I-40 wasn't finished through NC.
